Chapter 2 - The Patriarch’s Anathema

Arthur Sterling walked with the calculated grace of a predator who owned the jungle. At sixty-five, his silver hair was combed back with military precision, and his dark grey shirt was buttoned to the collar. He looked at the scene before him—the spilled food, the crying child, Clara standing defensively in the corner—without a single trace of surprise or sorrow.

"What is this chaos?" Arthur’s voice boomed, deep and devoid of human warmth.

"Your daughter-in-law is throwing another one of her hysterical fits, Arthur," Martha said smoothly, stepping back and wiping a speck of sauce from her hand with a cloth napkin. "She refuses to let us discipline the child. She’s raising a weak, demanding brat."

Clara took a step backward, placing her body between Arthur and her daughter. "Discipline? She’s two years old! Martha just yanked her food away and threw it at her!" Clara raised her hand, pointing accusingly at the elder woman, but her arm shook so violently she had to lower it. "Why are you always picking on her?! What has a toddler ever done to you?!"

Arthur walked slowly toward the table. His gaze shifted from Clara to the red welt blooming across her left cheek—the mark his own ring had left an hour earlier. A faint, cruel glint flickered in his dark eyes.

"You forget your place, Clara," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. "You entered this home as Julian’s wife, but you have brought nothing but discord and suspicion. You spy on my office. You question our medical decisions regarding Lily. You act as though you own a stake in the Sterling legacy."

"I am her mother!" Clara screamed, the restraint she had maintained for months finally shattering into million pieces. "And this house is a nightmare! You're keeping us isolated! You changed the security codes on the front gate, you intercepted my mail, and you—"

"Silence!" Arthur barked, taking two swift, aggressive steps forward. He raised a long, bony finger, pointing it directly at Clara’s face. The sheer malice in his posture forced Clara back until her spine hit the edge of the sideboard.

"You and your daughter, get out of my house!" Arthur snarled, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage. "You are a parasite, Clara. A mistake we should have corrected months ago!"

"Right, get out, you ungrateful woman!" Martha chimed in from behind him, her voice a sharp, cackling echo. "We gave you shelter, we gave you status, and you repay us with insolence! Pack your things and rot on the street!"

Lily let out a fresh wave of hysterical screams, terrified by the loud voices echoing off the tall plaster ceiling. Clara held the child tightly, her hands instinctively moving to cover Lily’s tiny ears. She felt completely cornered. The estate was miles away from the main road, her phone had been confiscated three days ago under the pretense of a "family digital detox," and the heavy security gates were locked.

Arthur stepped closer, his hand raising as if to seize Clara by her hair and drag her toward the entrance himself. "I won't tell you again, girl. Leave now, or I will have the security staff throw you into the forest ditch where you belong."

"Touch her," a sharp, metallic voice rang out from the archway, "and you won't live to see the sunset."
