Chapter 13 - Ashes of the Dynasty

Two weeks after the raid at Oakridge.

The autumn air had turned crisp and cold, painting the mountain forests in brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold. The grand Sterling estate sat completely silent, surrounded by yellow police tape fluttering in the mountain breeze. Federal asset forfeiture signs were staked into the manicured front lawn, announcing the liquidation of the property by the United States Marshals Service.

Julian stood on the stone overlook near the estate entrance, wearing a simple brown leather jacket, his hands tucked deep into his pockets.

Beside him stood Arthur's former private physician, Dr. Harrison—a man who had agreed to state's evidence in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

"How is he?" Julian asked quietly, looking out at the foggy valley below.

"The progression has accelerated exponentially," Dr. Harrison replied, shaking his head solemnity. "Without the synthetic cellular treatments he was extracting from your daughter, his immune system collapsed within seventy-two hours. The Huntington's symptoms have taken complete control of his central nervous system. He can no longer speak, nor can he swallow solid food."

"And my mother?"

"Martha is in a federal holding facility in Connecticut," Harrison said. "Her bail was set at five million dollars, but since the Justice Department froze every single bank account tied to the Sterling foundation, no one can post it. Her lawyers are currently trying to negotiate a plea deal that will keep her in a medium-security prison for the next twenty years."

Julian let out a long, slow breath. The cold air created a faint cloud of steam before his face. "And Lily? Is there any lingering damage from the compound they were giving her?"

Dr. Harrison smiled—a real, genuine smile of relief. "Your wife took her to the Children’s National Medical Center three days ago for a full toxicological flush. Her cellular markers are completely clean, Julian. The child is ninety-nine percent healthy. The 'asthma' was entirely manufactured. She’s going to grow up completely normal, strong, and free."

Julian nodded, a profound weight finally lifting off his shoulders. "Thank you, Harrison. For telling the D.A. the truth about the medical logs."

"I was a coward for three years, Julian," Harrison admitted, looking down at the ground with deep shame. "I let Arthur leverage my medical license because I owed him money. What your wife did that night... taking control of that monster... it saved more than just your family. It exposed an entire network of illegal clinical trials across the East Coast."

Julian turned and walked back toward his car, where Clara and Lily were waiting.
