Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The safe house was a modest two-bedroom apartment on the fourteenth floor of a high-rise overlooking the grey, rain-slicked skyline of downtown Metropolis. It felt cold and uninhabited, smelled faintly of dust and lemon polish, but to Clara, it felt like an impenetrable fortress compared to the Sterling mansion.

After bathing Lily, scrubbing away the dried tomato sauce, and tucking her into the small guest bed with a plush bear Julian had bought at a gas station, Clara walked into the dimly lit living room.

Julian was sitting on the leather sofa, a tumbler of whiskey sitting untouched on the glass coffee table before him. Spread out across the table were dozens of printed documents—pages he had pulled from his briefcase the moment they arrived.

Clara sat down beside him, drawing her knees up to her chest. She had changed into one of Julian’s oversized cotton t-shirts and a pair of sweatpants. The physical pain in her cheek was now an afterthought compared to the psychological terror gnawing at her mind.

"Tell me everything, Julian," she whispered. "No more keeping the peace. No more protecting me from your family's toxicity. I need to know what I married into."

Julian rubbed his face with his hands, letting out a long, weary sigh. "My family's money didn't come from real estate, Clara. That was just the public front Arthur created twenty years ago. The original Sterling fortune was built on pharmaceutical patents in the late 1970s. My grandfather founded a firm called Sterling-Genetics."

Clara leaned forward, her clinical instincts kicking in despite her fear. "I’ve read about Sterling-Genetics in my university textbooks. They were shut down by the FDA in 1989 for illegal human trials involving experimental neurological drugs."

"They were supposed to be shut down," Julian corrected grimly. "In reality, the research just went underground. My grandfather had a rare neurodegenerative disease—Huntington’s variant. It destroys the mind and body within a decade. He died of it when I was five. But before he died, he passed the genetic marker to my father."

Clara’s hand flew to her mouth. "Arthur has Huntington’s?"

"He carries the gene," Julian said, picking up one of the documents. "He should have shown symptoms ten years ago. But he hasn't. You know why?"

Clara shook her head, her mind reeling.

"Because for the last fifteen years, Arthur has been receiving experimental gene-therapy infusions derived from embryonic stem cells and specific, highly compatible human donor tissue," Julian explained, his voice shaking with revulsion. "He’s been buying time, Clara. Suppressing the disease artificially. But three years ago, his body began rejecting the synthetic treatments. His liver is failing, and his neurological markers are spiking."

Clara looked at the papers scattered on the table. She saw medical charts, blood typing grids, and genetic sequencing trees. Her eyes scanned the technical jargon until they landed on a highlighted section near the bottom of a lab report stamped with a red CONFIDENTIAL seal.

Donor Source: Matched Maternal Lineage (Clara Vance).

Target Recipient: Arthur Sterling.

Procedure: Allogeneic Bone Marrow / Cellular Extraction.

Clara felt the air leave her lungs in one sudden, excruciating gasp. The room seemed to spin violently around her. "They... they weren't trying to make me a part of the family," she breathed, her voice barely a squeak. "They screened me. When Julian brought me home to meet them four years ago... they didn't disapprove of my middle-class background. They were testing my blood!"

"They picked you, Clara," Julian whispered, tears overflowing his eyes as he looked at her with pure, unadulterated shame. "My father engineered our meeting at the university charity gala. He knew your medical history because your mother was an organ donor at the same hospital network where Arthur sat on the board. You were a perfect genetic match for their experimental harvesting program."
