Chapter 1 - The Descent of the Heiress

The grand foyer of the Sterling Manor was an architectural masterpiece designed specifically to intimidate. Built in 1892 by an industrialist who made his fortune in rail and timber, the mansion’s centerpiece was a breathtaking, dual-curved staircase crafted from imported white Carrara marble. It swept downward from a cavernous second-floor landing like two frozen, ivory waterfalls, meeting at a polished obsidian floor beneath a massive, two-ton crystal chandelier. Late afternoon light filtered through tall, arched stained-glass windows, bathing the white stone in a cold, atmospheric blue hue.

At the apex of the landing stood Evelyn Sterling.

At sixty-two, Evelyn moved with the precise, predatory grace of a woman who had never once been defied. Her short, silver-grey hair was sculpted into sharp, immaculate waves, and her tailored metallic-purple pantsuit shimmered like beetle armor under the cold chandeliers. Her lips were painted a deep, arterial crimson, currently curved into a thin, venomous smile.

A step below her, trembling in the cold draft of the high-ceilinged hall, was Clara.

Clara was twenty-four, fragile, and utterly out of her depth. Her fiery red hair spilled in loose, damp waves over the shoulders of a maternity dress made of blush-pink satin—a dress that clung softly to the pronounced, six-month curve of her pregnant belly. In her arms, Clara clutched a thick stack of white financial documents, her knuckles white, her tear-stained face pale as bone.

"Please, Mrs. Sterling," Clara whispered, her voice cracking against the cavernous echo of the hall. "I didn't steal these files. Julian gave them to me. He wanted me to keep them safe from you."

"Julian is a boy who plays with fire because he has never been burned," Evelyn said. Her voice was smooth, cultured, and devoid of human warmth, echoing like water dripping in a crypt. "You, on the other hand, are a common parasite. You thought entering this house with a Sterling bastard in your womb would make you untouchable. You forgot who built this house, Clara."

"He loves me!" Clara sobbed, taking a fearful step back toward the edge of the marble drop. "And this baby... this is your grandchild!"

Evelyn’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, terrifying disgust. "That child is an obstacle to a four-billion-dollar merger. And obstacles are removed."

Before Clara could scream, Evelyn stepped forward. Her metallic-purple sleeve flashed in the icy light as her hand struck Clara’s chest with sudden, ruthless violence.

Clara lost her footing. Her pink satin dress swished violently against the polished marble as her body tumbled backward off the top step.

The air tore from Clara’s lungs in a high-pitched, horrifying shriek that shattered the quiet of the estate. The stack of white financial documents exploded from her hands, scattering into the cold blue air like a flock of terrified white birds, fluttering downward alongside her falling body.

She was falling toward the hard, unforgiving obsidian floor twenty feet below.
