Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

Three months later.
The Federal District Courthouse in Manhattan was surrounded by hundreds of reporters, news vans, and flashing cameras. The trial of Evelyn Sterling had captivated the nation—a real-life gothic drama of billionaire greed, generational madness, and family betrayal.
Inside the quiet, wood-paneled courtroom, Julian sat at the prosecutor's table alongside Clara, who was now eight months pregnant, her blush-pink dress replaced by an elegant dark green maternity suit.
Across the room sat Evelyn Sterling. In three months, she had aged fifteen years. Her short silver hair was unstyled, her posture stooped, her expensive purple pantsuit replaced by a simple gray prison uniform. Her legal team had attempted every technical maneuver—claiming insanity, technological fabrication, and police misconduct—but the sheer clarity of the 4K video evidence had rendered every defense useless.
The judge slammed his heavy wooden gavel down, his voice echoing off the high ceiling.
"Evelyn Sterling, for the charge of attempted first-degree murder involving a pregnant minor relative, this court sentences you to twenty-five years at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years."
A collective gasp swept through the gallery, followed by the rapid clatter of reporters rushing for the doors.
Evelyn didn't move. She stared straight ahead, her eyes hollow, fixed on the brass seal of the state on the wall behind the judge. As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort her away, she turned her head slowly, her gaze landing on Julian and Clara.
She opened her dry lips, as if searching for a final curse, a final declaration of her untouchable status.

Julian didn't flinch. He simply raised his hand, wrapping his fingers tightly around Clara’s, and turned his face away toward the window where the morning sun was breaking through the city clouds.
Evelyn was led away in chains, her heels dragging against the linoleum floor—a silent, pathetic end to a dynasty built on terror.
