Chapter 7 - The Tearing of the Silk

By midnight, the storm outside had reached its peak, howling through the stone arches of Sterling Manor like a choir of angry ghosts.
In the foyer, two paramedics were carefully assisting Clara into a wheelchair to transport her to Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital for a comprehensive fetal evaluation. Though she insisted she felt fine, Julian refused to take any risks.
As they reached the front doors, the heavy oak entrance swung open, admitting a gust of freezing rain alongside Detective Robert Thorne—a veteran homicide investigator with a reputation for being entirely unbailable by rich families.
Thorne wiped the rain from his coat, his sharp eyes taking in the scene: the scattered papers on the obsidian floor, the broken marble pedestal, and the red-haired woman wrapped in cashmere.
"Mr. Sterling," Thorne said, nodding to Julian. "We've secured the security footage from your server room. It’s clean. Unedited. It’s the clearest case of attempted murder I’ve seen in twenty years."
"Is she in custody?" Julian asked, his hand resting on the back of Clara’s wheelchair.
"She’s in the back of the cruiser right now," Thorne replied, pulling a pair of wet leather gloves from his hands. "Her lawyers tried to claim medical emergency, but the county doctor cleared her. She’s going straight to the precinct for booking."
Clara let out a long, shuddering breath, her fingers tightening around Julian’s wrist. "It's really over?"
"Not yet," Julian said softly, looking out through the open doors toward the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the wet gravel driveway. "The legal fight will take months. Her allies will try to drag your name through the mud, Clara. They'll leak fake stories to the tabloids. They'll call you a liar."
Clara looked up at Julian, her blue eyes shining with a newfound, unbreakable strength born from surviving the fall.

"Let them try," Clara said, her voice steady and clear. "I survived Evelyn Sterling pushing me down a marble staircase. Words in a newspaper can't hurt me anymore."
Julian looked at her, feeling a wave of intense, overwhelming admiration wash over him. He bent down, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep kiss that sealed his devotion to her forever.
