Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Grace

The coastal house in Montauk was everything Sterling Manor had not been: small, weathered by salt air, and open to the sea. Purchased with the modest personal savings Julian had kept separate from the family trust, it sat on a low grassy bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
It was late October, and a cool, crisp breeze was blowing in from the water, rustling the high sea grass along the dunes.
Clara sat on the wide wooden porch, wrapped in an oversized wool sweater, watching Leo build a haphazard castle out of smooth beach stones on the sand below. Her red hair was pulled back in a loose braid, her skin kissed by the autumn sun, free of the pale, ghostly anxiety that had once defined her existence.
Julian walked out onto the porch carrying two mugs of hot cider, steam rising into the chilly air. He handed one to Clara and sat beside her on the wooden bench, pulling her close against his side.
"Marcus called today," Julian murmured, resting his chin against her hair. "The liquidation is complete. The Sterling name is officially retired from the New York Stock Exchange."
Clara took a slow sip of her cider, letting the warm cinnamon flavor wash over her tongue. "Do you ever miss it, Julian? The power? The prestige?"
Julian looked out at the vast, roaring ocean, watching a white gull swoop low over the cresting waves.
"I never had power in that house, Clara," Julian said quietly. "I had a golden leash. My mother used that fortune to control every breath I took, every decision I made. The day I caught you at the bottom of those stairs was the first day I ever felt truly powerful—because for the first time in my life, I was fighting for something that actually mattered."

Clara turned her face toward his, her blue eyes shining with quiet emotion. She reached up, her soft fingers tracing the line of his jaw, stopping at the silver hair at his temple.
"You saved two lives that day, Julian," she whispered. "Not just ours. You saved your own."
