Chapter 3 - The Line in the Marble

Slowly, deliberately, the relief in Julian’s chest curdled into something ancient, dark, and utterly lethal.
He shifted Clara slightly, ensuring her weight was supported against the soft leather cushion of a foyer chair near the base of the stairs. He unbuttoned his black shirt collar, his chest heaving as he stood up to his full six-foot-three height.
He turned toward the grand staircase.
High above, standing at the edge of the second-floor landing under the icy glare of the crystal chandelier, Evelyn Sterling watched them.
The evil, triumphant sneer that had graced Evelyn’s face moments ago had completely dissolved. Her hands, clad in metallic-purple sleeves, flew up to cover her mouth in a gesture of absolute, horror-stricken shock. Her eyes were wide, dilated with sudden, blinding panic as she realized Julian had arrived three minutes earlier than her security detail had promised.
Julian raised his head. His icy blue eyes locked onto his mother’s pale face with a glare so terrifying, so devoid of familial warmth, that the air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
"You just chose the wrong family, Evelyn," Julian said.
His voice was not a shout. It was a low, resonant rumble—a promise of absolute annihilation that echoed off the high marble arches and rattled the crystal drops of the chandelier above.
Evelyn took a shuddering step back from the ledge, her knees trembling beneath her metallic trousers. "Julian... you don't understand... she was going to expose the offshore accounts—"
"Quiet," Julian commanded. Single word. Absolute authority.
He reached into his back pocket, pulled out a encrypted satellite phone, and pressed a single pre-programmed key. He raised the phone to his ear, his gaze never leaving his mother’s trembling form.
"Marcus," Julian spoke into the receiver, his tone clinically calm. "Initiate Directive Seven. Burn the Sterling Trust. Release the SEC filings on my mother’s primary holdings, and call the State Police Homicide Unit. Tell them I am holding an attempted murderer at the Manor."

"Julian, no!" Evelyn shrieked from the landing, her aristocratic composure completely shattering. "I am your mother! I built this empire for you!"
"You didn't build an empire, Evelyn," Julian whispered, stepping onto the first marble step, his black boots crushing one of the scattered financial documents beneath his heel. "You built a cage. And I am tearing it down."
