Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Well

Evelyn slowly lifted her head. The mink coat looked heavy on her frail shoulders, but her eyes still held that stubborn, arrogant fire that had defined her entire life.

"You think you're clever, Julian," Evelyn rasped, her voice dripping with venom. "You think throwing away your inheritance for a gold-digging secretary makes you a hero? You are a fool. You are just like your father—weak, sentimental, and easily controlled by tears."

"My father died because he trusted you," Julian said coldly, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "He spent thirty years trying to satisfy a woman who had no soul. I won't make the same mistake."

"You have no proof I pushed her!" Evelyn spat, her hands trembling inside her mink sleeves. "It will be my word against hers! An aristocrat against a girl with no family, no money, and a history of anxiety disorders! Who do you think the jury will believe?"

Julian smiled—a slow, terrifying expression that made the blood run cold in Evelyn’s veins.

"They won't have to choose between your word and hers, Evelyn," Julian said quietly. He reached up and pointed to a subtle, brass-ringed glass lens mounted in the iron framework of the conservatory ceiling, partially hidden by creeping ivy. "When I renovated the security system last month, I replaced every analog camera in this house with 4K motion-tracking units. Including the foyer landing."

Evelyn’s face turned gray. "You... you recorded it?"

"Frame by frame," Julian confirmed, his voice smooth as ice. "The camera captured you stepping forward. It captured your hand striking her chest. It captured the exact angle of force you used to push a six-month pregnant woman down thirty feet of marble steps. The District Attorney already has the file."

Evelyn gasped, her breath catching in her throat as if she had been struck in the chest with an iron bar. Her hand flew to her collar, clutching the mink coat tightly as the reality of her situation finally shattered her psychological defenses.

"Julian..." she whimpered, her voice suddenly small, frail, and pathetic. "I am your mother... you can't do this to me... think of the family name..."

"The Sterling name died the moment you pushed her," Julian said coldly.

He turned his back on her, stepping away as two State Troopers entered the conservatory, their cuffs clicking loudly in the humid air.
