Chapter 4 - The Fracture of Certainty

The name "Sarah" hit the room like a silent detonation. To the guests, it meant nothing—a common name spoken by a terrified orphan. But to Evelyn, it was an sentence of execution. Sarah was her missing daughter, the child who had vanished twenty-three years ago amidst accusations of treason, madness, and murder within the Ashford dynasty. Evelyn had been told Sarah was dead. She had signed the death certificate herself. She had built a fortress of lies to protect the family name from the scandal of Sarah's defiance.

Now, looking into the eyes of this dirty, wet child, Evelyn saw the precise curve of Sarah’s jaw, the exact shade of dark hazel in her eyes. The depth of field in her perception narrowed down to a needle point: the guests, the chandelier, the empire she had built—all vanished into a dark fog. There was only this child. Her granddaughter.

"You're Sarah's daughter," Evelyn whispered, her voice choking on a mix of profound grief and sudden, agonizing joy.

The stoic matriarch abandoned all restraint. She pulled the girl into her chest, burying her face into the wet, mud-scented brown coat, ignoring the grime smearing across her face and dress. She wept openly, a primal, harrowing sound that shocked the assembled aristocracy into absolute silence. The decades of ice around her heart shattered into sharp, painful shards. But the relief was short-lived. A terrible, logical question forced its way through her grief. If the child was here... where was the mother?
