Chapter 6 - The Protocol of Silence

The low rumble of idling engines echoed faintly through the reinforced glass of the grand entrance. Inside the ballroom, the silence was no longer respectful; it was hostile. Evelyn standing in the center of the hall with a street child held firmly against her purple velvet skirts was an image that threatened the very market value of the Ashford enterprise.
Julian Ashford, Evelyn’s nephew and the chief chief operating officer of the family firm, stepped out from the cluster of elite guests. His black tuxedo was spotless, his hair combed back with grease, his face a calculated mask of concern.
"Aunt Evelyn," Julian murmured, his voice lowered so as not to reach the ears of the press who were waiting in the outer lounges. "This is a disaster. The child is obviously an asset sent by our competitors to disrupt the gala. Let security handle her. We have an announcement to make."
Evelyn didn't look at him. Her eyes remained locked on the dark doorway. "Touch her, Julian, and I will have you stripped of your board seat before the night ends."
Julian flinched, a flash of resentment crossing his features. "She’s a dirty stray carrying an old family relic. Sarah died twenty years ago in a mental facility in Zurich. You know this. The records are sealed!"
"Records can be forged," Evelyn said quietly, her tone dropping into a dangerous, razor-thin register. "Liars can be bought. But blood does not lie."

She looked down at the child. The girl was shivering violently, her small fingers digging into the heavy fabric of Evelyn's dress. "What is your name, child?"
"Lily," the girl whispered, her breath smelling faintly of cheap bread and rain water. "Mama told me to run inside if the black cars stopped. She said... she said the lady in purple would know what to do."
