Chapter 5 - The Shadows Beyond the Threshold

Evelyn pulled back, holding the young girl at arm's length. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but the frantic, defensive sharp light of an old predator returned to her gaze.

"Where is your mother?" Evelyn asked, her voice low and urgent, her hands gripping the child's arms with absolute focus. "Tell me! Where is Sarah?"

The little girl’s face twisted in renewed terror. She didn't look at Evelyn; her tear-filled eyes darted past the weeping woman, past the frozen crowd, toward the massive, arched mahogany doors at the end of the long hall. Her small, dirt-caked hand raised, pointing a trembling finger toward the dark, rain-swept courtyard outside.

"Outside..." the child whimpered, her voice rising in panic as she relived the terror of her journey. "...before the men come back!"

The ambient light of the ballroom suddenly felt blinding, exposed, and utterly unsafe. The warmth of the gold trim turned sickly. Evelyn stood up slowly, keeping her body between the open doorway and the trembling child. She looked down the length of the white marble aisle toward the entrance.

Out in the darkness beyond the glass lanterns, where the rain beat mercilessly against the stone driveway, the headlights of three black SUVs cut through the fog, turning silently toward the mansion. The past had not just returned to seek forgiveness; it had brought its hunters with it. Evelyn reached down, grasped her granddaughter’s small hand, and prepared to tear her own kingdom apart to keep the darkness out.
