Chapter 9 - The Descent to the Foundation

The confrontation was over in seconds. Disabled, disarmed, and forced to their knees, the four operatives were secured by Evelyn's personal guards. Julian attempted to slip out through a service corridor, but two guards blocked his path, forcing him back into the dim, ruinous center of the ballroom.
Evelyn knelt once more beside Lily, wiping a tear from the child's mud-stained cheek with the hem of her expensive dress.
"Where is she, Lily?" Evelyn asked, her voice soft now, maternal, a tone no one in this room had heard in thirty years. "Where did they take your mother?"
Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out a damp, crumpled piece of paper—a map drawn in charcoal on the back of a medical receipt. "Mama said... under the old clock tower. The door with the red mark."
Evelyn’s heart stopped. The old clock tower was located on the northern edge of the Ashford estate—a structure built over a series of late 19th-century coal cellars that had been officially decommissioned forty years ago. It was a place she thought had been abandoned to the ivy and rust.
She looked up at Julian, who was shaking, surrounded by armed guards.
"You kept her there?" Evelyn asked, her voice a whisper of sheer horror. "For twenty years? You kept my daughter beneath the earth?"
"She knew about the offshore transfers!" Julian spat, his composure entirely collapsing into spiteful fury. "She was going to destroy the family! Uncle Arthur ordered it before he died! I just... I just kept the system running!"

Evelyn stood up. She did not yell. She did not strike him. She simply looked at him as if he were an insect that had crawled out from beneath a rotton log.
"Take him to the vault," Evelyn ordered her chief of security. "Lock him in. If I do not return with my daughter, leave him there."
