Chapter 8 - The Crucible of Truth

The scar-faced operative did not hesitate. He drew a silenced pistol from his coat, ignoring the collective shriek that tore through the ballroom as the elite guests scattered like sheep, knocking over champagne towers and velvet chairs in their desperate scramble for the side exits.
"This isn't a board meeting, Lady Ashford," the operative said coldly, advancing down the marble path. "Your authority ends where our contract begins."
Evelyn didn't run. She didn't flinch. In her seven decades, she had survived corporate wars, blackmail, and political purges. The psychological illusion of her fragility was her enemies' greatest mistake.
Reaching into the hidden pocket of her dark purple velvet skirt, her fingers closed around a small, antique silver remote—the manual override for the estate's emergency security systems, an item she had carried since the night Sarah vanished.
She pressed the primary trigger.
Heavy, solid-steel blast shutters slammed down over every window and doorway in the ballroom with the deafening roar of falling guillotine blades. The heavy mahogany front doors were instantly sealed behind a six-inch slab of reinforced armor plate. The room was sealed off from the outside world. The brilliant crystal chandelier flickered once, twice, and then cut out, plunging the grand hall into a terrifying, shadow-drenched twilight powered only by emergency floor-strips.
In the gloom, the operative raised his weapon, but Evelyn had already moved.

"Security team Alpha," Evelyn's voice echoed through the hidden ceiling speakers, magnified by the house intercom. "Protocol Zero. Eliminate all unauthorized armed personnel in the main hall."
The hidden panels in the white and gold walls slid open. Real security—Evelyn’s private guard, men loyal only to her payroll—emerged with submachine guns trained on the four intruders.
