Chapter 10 - The Reckoning in the Dark

Downstairs, the battle for the Vance estate had reached a lethal climax.
Nathan was hit. A bullet had grazed his left arm, blood soaking through his white shirt, but he had managed to eliminate the second intruder near the kitchen island.
The third intruder—a tall, muscular man with a scar running across his visible eye under his mask—had flanked Nathan, kicking the pistol out of his hand and pinning him against the white marble counter where Victoria had once stood with her oak stick.
"Where is the girl?" the man growled in a thick Eastern European accent, pressing a tactical knife against Nathan’s throat.
Nathan spat blood onto the man's mask. "Go to hell."
The man raised the knife, preparing to drive it into Nathan’s chest.
Suddenly, a heavy bronze bar swung through the darkness with terrifying force.
CRACK.
The solid metal struck the intruder across the side of his head. The man groaned, staggering sideways, his grip on Nathan slipping as he crashed into the dark grey cabinets, shattering glass doors in a shower of sharp crystals.
Clara stood in the doorway, holding the bronze sculpture with both hands, her hair messy, her eyes filled with a primal, protective fury.
The intruder shook his head, bleeding heavily from under his mask, and lunged at Clara with his knife.
Nathan didn't give him the chance. He grabbed the heavy oak polishing stick that had remained mounted on the wall as a reminder of their past, and drove it with all his strength into the back of the intruder's knees.
The man collapsed onto the marble floor. Nathan threw his weight over him, wrestling the knife away and pinning his arms behind his back with plastic zip-ties he pulled from the intruder's own tactical vest.
The kitchen fell silent once more.
The only sound was the heavy breathing of Nathan and Clara, standing together in the dimly lit, blood-stained room among the broken glass and shattered cabinets.

Nathan looked at Clara, his face wet with sweat and blood, a breathless laugh escaping his lips. "Nice swing."
Clara dropped the bronze sculpture onto the floor, wiping her bruised brow with the back of her hand. "I had a bad teacher."
