Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Glass

Victoria took three steps back, her heels making a sharp, frantic rhythm on the marble. Her face had completely lost its composure. The elegant socialite had vanished; in her place stood a woman cornered by her own dark history.
"Nathan, think about what you're doing!" Victoria pleaded, her hands clutching the pearl necklace around her throat. "Look at her! She’s a domestic worker! She’s trying to trap you! You know how people try to get to our family’s money!"
"I remember Maine, Victoria," Nathan said, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. "I remember the summer before we got married. I remember Clara Bennett suddenly disappearing from the estate without a word. You told me she quit. You told me she stole five thousand dollars from the safe and ran away to Europe."
Clara stood up slowly, bringing Lily with her. She held the child tightly against her hip, resting a hand on Lily's soft hair. "She didn't just fire me, Nathan. When I found out I was pregnant, I tried to reach you. Victoria intercepted my letters. Her father’s lawyers came to my mother's house in Boston. They threatened to put my brother in prison on fake drug charges unless I signed a non-disclosure agreement, changed my legal name to Clara Miller, and stayed away from you forever."
"That's a lie!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking. "I never did that!"
"I have the documents, Nathan," Clara said, her voice dropping into a flat, deadly monotone. "I have the signed agreement in a safe deposit box in downtown Chicago. I have the bank transfer records from the Vance Foundation to my mother’s medical fund. Every single cent was tracked."
Nathan turned his head to look at Victoria. His eyes were cold, unblinking, and vacant of any remaining affection. "Is this true?"
"Nathan, I did it for us!" Victoria cried out, dropping her refined act entirely. Tears ruined her mascara, leaving black tracks down her pale cheeks. "We were about to merge the Vance and Sterling corporations! If a scandal like an illegitimate child with a servant came out, the board would have pulled out! Our marriage would have been ruined! Everything we built... I saved our future!"
"You didn't save my future," Nathan said quietly, stepping closer to Victoria until he was towering over her. "You stole my daughter."
"She’s a bastard!" Victoria shrieked, losing control completely. She pointed a manicured finger at Lily, her face twisted in disgust. "Look at her! She doesn't belong in this world! She doesn't belong in my house!"
"This is my house," Nathan roared, his voice echoing off the high, white ceilings, making the glass cabinets vibrate.
Victoria flinched, stepping back until her spine slammed against the dark grey wood of the kitchen island.
Nathan turned back to Clara. The anger in his eyes softened into a profound, crushing sorrow as he looked at the purple bruise on her forehead and the tear-stained face of the child clinging to her.

"Clara..." Nathan breathed, stepping toward them, his hands raised in surrender. "I didn't know. God help me, I swear to you, I didn't know."
"I know you didn't, Nathan," Clara whispered, her green eyes filled with pain. "That's the only reason I came back. Not for your money. Not for this house. I came back because Lily was sick, and I needed you to know she existed before Victoria destroyed every trace of us."
