Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Trap

The air in the kitchen was thick, almost unbreathable. Outside the large, floor-to-ceiling windows, the afternoon sun cast long, cold shadows across the manicured lawns of the estate.

Victoria leaned heavily against the kitchen island, her breath coming in short, jagged rasps. Her minds was working frantically, searching for an exit, a strategy, a narrative she could spin to the press, to the board, to her family.

"Nathan," Victoria started again, her tone shifting radically into a smooth, persuasive murmur. "Listen to me. We can handle this quietly. We can settle with her. We can give her a million dollars... two million. She can take the girl and live comfortably in another state. No one ever has to know about this. Think about your reputation. Think about the merger next month."

Nathan looked at his wife as if seeing her for the first time in ten years. "You really think this is about money? You think you can buy your way out of beating a child and a helpless woman with a wooden post?"

"She broke my porcelain!" Victoria yelled, her composure fracturing again. "She violated her contract by coming here under a false name! She committed fraud!"

"She came to find her daughter's father!" Nathan shouted back. He turned to Clara, his tone softening instantly. "Clara, take Lily upstairs to the master guest suite. Lock the door from the inside."

"Nathan, don't you dare let them stay in this house!" Victoria demanded, stepping forward, her heels clicking aggressively.

Nathan turned on his heel, pointing a single, rigid finger at Victoria’s face. "If you take one step toward them, Victoria, I swear to God I will call the Chief of Police directly on my personal line, and I will have you booked for assault with a deadly weapon before the sun sets."

Victoria froze. The mention of the Chief of Police—a man who frequently attended their charity galas—hit her like a splash of ice water.

Clara didn't wait. She gathered Lily tighter in her arms and walked quickly toward the grand staircase in the hallway, avoiding the broken shards of china scattered across the marble floor. Lily kept her small face buried in Clara’s neck, her small fingers clutching the grey linen of her mother's uniform.

As Clara’s footsteps faded up the stairs, Nathan walked over to the kitchen counter. He picked up his personal cell phone, tapped the screen, and placed it on speaker mode.

“Vance Residence, private line,” a calm, professional female voice answered through the speaker.

"Sarah," Nathan said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Cancel all my meetings for the rest of the week. Contact Arthur Pendelton at the legal firm. Tell him I need him at the house in thirty minutes with full divorce papers and an emergency order of protection."

Victoria let out a strangled gasp. "Nathan! No! You can't do this!"

"And Sarah," Nathan continued, ignoring his wife’s screams. "Contact the head of security. I want the locks on the main gates changed by tonight, and I want Mrs. Vance’s access credentials revoked from all corporate accounts immediately."

“Understood, Mr. Vance. Mr. Pendelton will be there shortly.”

The call disconnected with a soft click.

Nathan set the phone on the white counter. He turned to face Victoria, who was gripping the edge of the dark grey cabinets so hard her knuckles were turning blue.

"It's over, Victoria," Nathan said softly. "The house, the money, the name. You've lost it all."
