THE SILENT ILLUSION OF MARBLE / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Swiss Connection

Twenty-four hours after the failed assault on the Vance estate, a team of Federal Marshals and Swiss police officers surrounded an isolated, ultra-modern chalet in the mountains of Saint-Moritz, Switzerland.

Inside the chalet, Victoria Vance sat near a roaring fire, sipping a glass of expensive red wine. She was dressed in a dark maroon silk robe, her blonde hair styled perfectly, waiting for the phone call confirming that her plan had succeeded.

The phone on her glass table rang.

Victoria smiled, picking it up eagerly. "Is it done?"

“Victoria Vance?” a stern, accented voice answered through the speaker. “This is Inspector Weber of the Federal Police of Switzerland. We have a warrant for your arrest issued by Interpol.”

Victoria’s glass slipped from her hand, crashing against the stone hearth, spilling red wine across the white sheepskin rug like a pool of blood.

"What... what are you talking about?" she stammered, standing up frantically.

“Your hired operatives in Chicago were apprehended by federal authorities,” the Inspector stated coldly. “They have provided full statements implicating you in attempted kidnapping, conspiracy to commit murder, and international terrorism. Step outside with your hands up.”

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the chalet, red and blue emergency lights illuminated the snowy mountainside. Spotlights cut through the dark night, blinding Victoria as she stood paralyzed in her luxurious living room.

The heavy oak doors of the chalet were breached with a violent hydraulic slam.

Swiss tactical officers flooded the room, their weapons trained on her. Within seconds, Victoria was forced onto her knees, her hands pulled behind her back, secured in silver steel handcuffs.

As she was dragged out into the freezing alpine air, Victoria looked down at the red wine soaking into her white rug. The pristine, untouchable world she had built out of money, lies, and violence had finally collapsed under the weight of her own madness.
