Chapter 6 - The Confession of Steel

Three days later, the high-society world of Chicago was rocked by a scandal that dominated every major newspaper and news broadcast.

The headline on the front page of the Chicago Tribune read: VANCE EMPIRE IN TURMOIL: BILLIONAIRE FILES FOR EMERGENCY DIVORCE AMID DOMESTIC ASSAULT CHARGES.

In a private conference room on the forty-fifth floor of the Vance Tower, Nathan Vance sat at the head of a long, polished mahogany table. Surrounding him were eight senior board members, three corporate crisis managers, and his chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton.

At the far end of the table, displayed on a high-definition screen, was a live video feed from the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

"Nathan," Pendelton said, placing a thick stack of papers in front of his client. "The board is extremely concerned about the reputational fallout. Victoria’s family is threatening to launch a proxy war to remove you as CEO. They’re claiming you fabricated these domestic violence charges to seize her trust assets."

Nathan didn't look at the legal documents. He looked around the room at the men and women in expensive suits who had spent ten years helping him build his empire.

"Let them try," Nathan said, his voice flat, resolute, and devoid of fear.

He reached down, opened his leather briefcase, and pulled out a black USB flash drive. He tossed it onto the center of the mahogany table, where it slid across the polished wood and stopped in front of the lead crisis manager.

"What is this, Nathan?" the manager asked, brow furrowed.

"That is the raw, unedited footage from the kitchen security system at my estate," Nathan stated calmly. "Including high-definition audio of Victoria striking Clara with an oak post, calling my daughter a bastard, and admitting to paying off Clara’s family fourteen years ago."

The room fell into an absolute, stunned silence.

"You had cameras in your kitchen?" Pendelton asked, surprised.

"I installed them three years ago when Victoria started complaining about items going missing from the wine cellar," Nathan said, a cold, bitter smile touching his lips. "She didn't know I had expanded the coverage to the staff pantry and the preparation area."

He stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.

"If Victoria’s family wants a public war, give them that flash drive," Nathan continued, looking at every board member in the room. "Tell them that if they file a single motion against this company or against Clara, I will air that video on national television during prime-time news. I am taking a leave of absence starting today. Clara and Lily are moving into the estate permanently."

Without waiting for a response, Nathan turned and walked out of the board room, leaving the most powerful executives in Chicago in stunned silence.
