Chapter 2 - The Echoes of a Lie

Nathan took two slow, rigid steps forward, his eyes locked on the floor.

The word—Daddy—seemed to hang in the air, freezing the room in time. It wasn't directed at Victoria. It was directed at the doorway, aimed directly at him.

"Nathan, don't listen to this insanity," Victoria rushed forward, her black high heels clicking rapidly against the marble. She reached out to touch his arm, her manicured fingers trembling. "The maid went completely crazy. She broke the heirloom set... she threatened me! I was only defending myself!"

Nathan didn't look at his wife. He brushed her hand off his arm with a single, sharp movement of his elbow, his gaze fixed on the girl in the navy blue dress.

Clara slowly pushed herself up from the floor, holding her left shoulder where the wooden stick had struck her. Her face was pale, her dark hair unspooling from her neat hairnet. On her right cheek, a nasty, red swelling had already formed, accompanied by a dark purple bruise creeping along her jawline and temple—the remnants of a blow Victoria had delivered minutes before Nathan had entered the room. Her eyes were rimmed with red, tears tracking through the dust and porcelain powder on her skin.

She gathered Lily into her lap, sitting among the sharp, shattered edges of the white ceramic plates.

"Clara..." Nathan said, his voice raspy, his chest heaving under his blue vest. "What is this? Who is this child?"

Victoria stepped between Nathan and the maid, her hands raised, her tone rising into an anxious shriek. "She’s a liar, Nathan! I hired her from the agency six months ago because her references seemed legitimate! She’s been stealing from us! She brought her illegitimate brat into our home, hiding her in the servant quarters! I found them in here breaking my mother’s china!"

"Shut up, Victoria," Nathan said quietly.

Victoria gasped, taking a step back as if she had been slapped. "What did you say to me?"

"I said shut up," Nathan repeated, his voice dropping into an icy register that terrified even his wife. He stepped around Victoria, kneeling on the hard, white stone right beside the broken porcelain.

He looked at the little girl. Lily was looking back at him through a screen of dark curls, her small blue eyes identical to his own—the exact shape, the exact rare amber flecks around the pupils.

Nathan’s hand trembled as he reached out, touching the hem of Lily’s navy blue dress. "Lily...?"

"She's your daughter, Nathan," Clara said, her voice trembling but steady, ringing out through the quiet room like a bell.

Nathan’s head snapped up to look at Clara. "What?"

"She is your daughter," Clara repeated, tears spilling over her bruised cheeks. She looked directly into Nathan’s eyes, refusing to back down. "Fourteen years ago. The summer cottage in Maine. You remember Clara Bennett, don't you? Before Victoria paid off my family and forced me to change my name?"

Victoria let out a shrill, hysterical laugh. "She’s insane! Nathan, call the police! Call security right now! She’s an extortionist! She’s trying to ruin us!"

Nathan ignored his wife entirely. He stood up slowly, his tall frame looming over the kneeling maid and the crying child. His face went through a terrifying progression of emotions—denial, recognition, horror, and finally, a deep, black rage.

He turned slowly to face Victoria.

"Victoria," Nathan said, his voice terrifyingly calm, his eyes dark with a storm of realization. "Step away from them."
