Chapter 10 - The Psychological Siege

Julian didn't draw his gun. Instead, he sat down in the armchair directly across from her, crossing his legs casually, looking at her with a terrifying, detached amusement.

"Vanessa was the weak link, wasn't she?" Julian asked, setting his scotch glass down. "She was volatile, cruel, and undisciplined. You needed someone to play the role of the abusive stepmother to draw my attention away from the financial fraud you were committing at the firm."

Eleanor let out a soft, humorless laugh, leaning back against the leather cushions. "Vanessa was an idiot. She let her personal envy get in the way of the plan. I told her to leave the child alone, to just let the girl fade into the background. But Vanessa couldn't stand the fact that Lily looked like Sarah. She couldn't control her own pathetic sickness."

"And you?" Julian pressed, his voice dropping an octave. "What was your goal, Eleanor? Money?"

"Power," Eleanor corrected sharply, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious fire. "You built a billion-dollar empire, Julian, and who did the actual work? Who managed the books? Who covered up your late nights? Me. While you went home to your pristine wife and your perfect little daughter, I was running your life from the shadows."

"So you decided to murder my wife," Julian said flatly.

"Sarah was going to audit the personal accounts," Eleanor said, shrugging her shoulders as if discussing a minor corporate inconvenience. "She found the discrepancies in the offshore transfers. I didn't have a choice. Vanessa helped me stage the fall down the cellar stairs. It was clean. Beautiful. The coroner didn't suspect a thing."

"And the pet food?" Julian asked, his jaw tightening slightly. "The laundry room? Was that part of the corporate strategy?"

"That was Vanessa's little bonus," Eleanor sneered. "She enjoyed breaking things. I let her have her fun as long as it kept you distracted from the SEC disclosures I was preparing to file under your name."

Julian nodded slowly, absorbing every word, every admission, every confession of psychopathic arrogance.

"You think you're very clever, don't you, Eleanor?" Julian murmured.

"I know I am," Eleanor replied, reaching into her leather handbag resting beside her on the sofa. "Which is why you're going to sign the authorization papers I brought tonight. You're going to transfer management control of the fund to my shell company, and then you're going to take Lily and leave the country."

She pulled a black, sleek object from her bag—a compact 9mm pistol equipped with a thick, cylindrical suppressor.

"Or else," Eleanor whispered, pointing the silenced barrel directly at Julian’s chest, "the police will find a very tragic scene here tonight. A grieving husband who couldn't handle the scandal of his second wife's arrest, taking his own life after a fatal altercation with his assistant."
