Chapter 7 - The Shadow in the Archives

Three days later, the storm of media attention had quieted down into a low, rumbling hum in the local newspapers. Vanessa Sterling was being held without bail at the county jail, facing multiple felony charges of child endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, and severe physical abuse.
The house at 42 Whispering Pines Drive was quiet. Julian had taken an extended leave of absence from his position at the hedge fund, dedicating every hour of his day to Lily. He had brought in child psychologists, redecorated Lily's bedroom in bright, warm colors, and personally cooked every meal for her, ensuring she felt absolute security within the walls of her home.
Yet, despite the resolution, a persistent, cold needle of doubt remained planted in the back of Julian's mind.
It was midnight. Lily was fast asleep in her second-floor bedroom, protected by a state-of-the-art baby monitor resting on Julian’s nightstand.
Julian sat in his basement study—a soundproofed, windowless room lined with dark mahogany bookshelves and locked steel filing cabinets. The room was illuminated only by the pale green glow of three high-definition monitors resting on his oversized desk.
Julian was reviewing the secondary camera archives—not the footage from the day of the arrest, but the continuous recordings from the previous six months, going all the way back to the weeks following his first wife Sarah's death.
He clicked his mouse, fast-forwarding through weeks of silent, black-and-white nocturnal footage of the house.
On the center monitor, the video showed the main hallway outside Sarah's old bedroom. The timestamp in the lower right corner read October 14th, 02:14 AM—exactly four days before Sarah was found dead at the bottom of the cellar stairs, her neck broken, her system laced with a lethal concentration of muscle relaxants that the coroner had ultimately deemed a tragic, accidental overdose.
Julian paused the video.
A shadow moved across the frame. A figure dressed in a dark robe walked quietly down the hallway toward Sarah's room.
Julian zoomed in on the figure's hands. The person was carrying a glass of warm water and a small, white plastic pill bottle.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He leaned closer to the monitor, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

The figure in the video paused under the hall skylight, turning slightly toward the camera.
It was not Vanessa.
