Chapter 13 - The Choice of Light

Julian lifted his head slowly.

Standing at the top of the dark staircase, holding her favorite stuffed bear, was Lily. She wore her bright yellow pajamas, her small feet bare against the cold wooden floor, her blue eyes wide with sleep and confusion.

"Daddy... I heard a loud noise," Lily whimpered, rubbing her eyes with her tiny fist. "Are you okay?"

Julian looked down at the woman pinned beneath his knee—the monster who deserved death, the architect of his family's horror. Then he looked back up at his innocent daughter standing in the light at the top of the stairs.

He realized in that single, profound moment that if he pulled the trigger, he would become the very thing he was trying to protect Lily from. He would fill her world with another murder, another bloodstain, another shadow that would haunt her forever.

Julian slowly eased the pressure off the trigger. He engaged the safety on his pistol and slipped it back into his holster.

"I'm okay, baby," Julian called out, his voice instantly softening, turning warm and gentle. "Daddy just dropped a lamp. Go back to bed, sweetheart. I'll be right up to read you a story."

Lily lingered for a second, then nodded obediently, turning around and walking softly back toward her bedroom.

Julian looked down at Eleanor. He grabbed a pair of heavy plastic zip-ties from his coat pocket on the bar cart—the ones he had prepared earlier—and bound her wrists tightly behind her back.

Outside, the distant, screaming wail of police sirens broke through the night air, approaching Whispering Pines Drive from every direction. Red and blue lights began to sweep across the high glass windows of the living room, painting the dark room in colors of absolute, unavoidable justice.

Julian stood up, stepping away from the weeping woman on the floor. He picked up his scotch glass, walked over to the fireplace, and threw the remaining amber liquid into the dying embers, watching a sudden, bright flare of light illuminate the dark room.
