Chapter 6 - The Arrival of the Law

Two uniformed officers from the Pine Ridge Police Department rounded the corner into the kitchen, led by a tall, gray-haired detective in a dark trench coat. Detective Vance’s face was grim, his hand resting casually near the holster at his hip.
"We heard the whole thing through the audio relay, Mr. Sterling," Vance said, his eyes sweeping over the scene—the trembling child, the tray of pet food on the counter, and the pathetic woman cowering on the floor.
"Get her out of my house," Julian said quietly, turning his back on Vanessa to shield Lily’s vision from the impending arrest.
"Julian! No! Please!" Vanessa shrieked as the junior officer stepped forward, grabbing her wrists and pulling them behind her back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the high-ceilinged room—a sound of absolute finality. "Julian, you can't do this to me! Think of the press! Think of your firm's reputation!"
"My firm's reputation died the day I let you near my daughter," Julian said without turning around.
"You arranged this!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking into a chaotic, hysterical pitch as she was dragged toward the kitchen doorway. "You trapped me! You set me up! You wanted this to happen!"
"I set up a mirror, Vanessa," Julian murmured under his breath as the front door slammed shut, cutting off her hysterical cries, leaving the house in a sudden, profound silence. "You were the one who chose to show your true face."
Julian walked over to the kitchen island, pulling out one of the high leather barstools, and sat down with Lily. He gently set her down on his lap, grabbing a clean dish towel from the rack to wipe the tears and dust from her delicate face.
Lily looked up at him, her wide blue eyes searching her father’s face. "Is she gone, Daddy? Is she really gone?"
"She's gone, sweetheart," Julian whispered, kissing her forehead gently. "She's never coming back. I promise you."

"Can... can we leave the light on in the laundry room tonight?" Lily asked softly, her small hand clutching his thumb.
Julian felt a sharp tear sting his own eye, but he forced a warm, gentle smile. "We're going to leave every light in this house on tonight, baby. Every single one."
