Chapter 4 - The Second Lens

Vanessa backed away until her hips hit the edge of the quartz island. She was trapped between the heavy kitchen counter and the towering, furious frame of the man she had married for his money, his status, and his seemingly gullible nature.

"You thought you were so clever, didn't you?" Julian whispered, leaning his face down until he was mere inches from Vanessa’s ear. His breath was cold, his expression carved from dark, unforgiving stone. "You learned the blind spots of the system. You learned which circuit breaker controlled the hallway dome camera. You spent weeks mapping out how to terrorize a six-year-old child without leaving a digital footprint."

Vanessa’s breath came in fast, shallow gasps. She raised her hands in a defensive gesture, her polished nails trembling. "Julian, please... let's talk about this in private... don't do this in front of Lily..."

"Too bad for you," Julian sneered, his eyes narrowing into two icy slits of absolute contempt. "That wasn't the only camera in this house."

Vanessa’s heart skipped a violent beat. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. "What... what did you say?"

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black smartphone. With a single flick of his thumb, he unlocked the screen and held it up directly in front of Vanessa’s face.

Displayed on the high-resolution screen was a live, crystal-clear, wide-angle feed of the kitchen. But the perspective was not from the ceiling dome. It was from eye level, hidden discreetly inside the brass housing of the antique pendulum clock sitting on the mantelpiece across the room.

On the screen, in vivid color and crisp digital audio, was the entire scene played back in real-time: Vanessa grabbing Lily’s ponytail, the harsh, abusive words screaming from her mouth, the ruthless shove toward the pet food tray, and the absolute, terrifying cruelty etched into her face.

"A second system," Julian murmured into her ear, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "A secondary, hardwired network that doesn't run on the house Wi-Fi. A network you knew nothing about. Installed three weeks ago, Vanessa. Ever since Lily started showing up with unexplained bruises on her wrists."

Vanessa stared at the glowing screen, her reflection overlapping with the video of her own monstrous behavior. Her knees buckled, and she slid downward, barely catching herself against the edge of the cabinets.
