THE SILENT LENS OF MADNESS / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - The Fracture of Trust

The acceleration of Julian’s movement was pure instinct—a primal instinct that bypassed thought and went straight to survival. Within two long strides, he crossed the expanse of the kitchen, his polished dress shoes sliding slightly on the sleek floor.

He didn't just step between them; he shoved Vanessa back with an arm of iron, forcing her to break her ironclad grip on Lily's hair. Vanessa stumbled backward against the stainless steel refrigerator, her silk shirt rustling sharply as her spine hit the cold metal. Her manicured hands flew to her chest, her pale blue eyes wide with a mixture of shock and sudden, darting paranoia.

Julian dropped to his knees on the cold floor, reaching out with trembling arms to pull his daughter into his chest. Lily collapsed into him instantly, her tiny body shivering so violently he thought her bones might break. She buried her face into the curve of his neck, her hot tears soaking through the gray cotton of his shirt.

"Daddy! Daddy!" she sobbed, her voice a ragged, breathless squeak of pure terror.

Julian wrapped his heavy arms around her, burying his face in her soft, strawberry-blonde curls. He could feel the erratic, terrifyingly fast thump of her little heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The scent of fear on her—cold sweat, tears, and the harsh, dusty aroma of the pet food—ignited a dark, blinding fury in his chest that he had never felt before.

He lifted his head, his eyes locking onto Vanessa with an intensity that made the blonde woman step back, her heels clicking nervously against the tile. His jaw was clenched so hard his teeth groaned under the pressure.

"Vanessa!" Julian growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated from the deep recesses of his chest. "If you ever treat my daughter like an animal again, I swear to God, you will never come near her again! Do you hear me? Never!"

Vanessa swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she attempted to reassemble her shattered composure. She smoothed the front of her beige silk shirt with trembling fingers, a desperate, defensive mask slipping back over her features.

"Julian, you don't understand," Vanessa stammered, her voice high and unnaturally breathy. "She was being defiant... she spilled her food on purpose... I was just trying to teach her discipline... she’s manipulative, Julian! She’s playing you!"

"Discipline?" Julian roared, standing up slowly while keeping Lily securely cradled in his left arm, his hand protecting the back of her head. "You were forcing her face into dog food! Are you out of your insane mind?!"
