Chapter 4 - THE POISONED ACCUSATION

The heavy glass doors of the villa slammed open once again, and Arthur Sterling—Victoria’s brother-in-law and Leo’s father—came rushing out onto the patio. Muffled by his private study's acoustic insulation, he had only just heard the splash and the echoing screams. Clad in a dark black dress shirt and tailored trousers, his face was a mask of sudden, paralyzing panic.

"What happened?! What was that noise?!" Arthur demanded, his eyes darting frantically across the illuminated terrace.

Elena was dragging herself up the shallow stone steps of the pool, her beige uniform weighed down by dozens of pounds of water, water cascading off her trembling frame. She collapsed onto her knees on the slick marble, cradling the shivering, crying infant against her chest, wrapping her own wet body around him to shield him from the wind.

Before Elena could utter a single word to explain the horror of what had transpired, Victoria moved with terrifying, practiced speed.

Victoria threw her hands to her face, gasping in manufactured, breathless horror. Tears spilled effortlessly down her cheeks, glistening under the warm terrace lights as she pointed a manicured finger directly at the kneeling, soaked maid.

"Arthur! Oh my God, Arthur!" Victoria shrieked, her voice trembling with a terrifyingly believable performance of maternal anguish. "It was Elena! She pushed him! She pushed the stroller into the pool! I saw her do it with my own eyes!"

Arthur turned his head, his face instantly draining of all color. His eyes locked onto Elena, who was shivering on the ground, holding his dripping son. The sheer weight of Victoria’s status, her position as a trusted family member, and the sight of the maid emerging from the water created an immediate, deadly narrative in his grief-stricken mind.

"What?!" Arthur bellowed, his voice dropping into an animalistic roar of rage.

"I tried to stop her!" Victoria wailed, stepping closer to Arthur, clutching his arm with desperate strength. "She was trying to drown him! She's sick, Arthur! She wanted revenge for the pay deduction last week!"

Elena looked up, her dark eyes wide with utter shock and betrayal. The water dripping from her hair blurred her vision, but she could see the murderous fury distorting Arthur's features as he stepped toward her.

"No... No, sir!" Elena stammered, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. "That's not true! I saved him! I jumped in to save him!"

"Shut up!" Arthur screamed. He lunged forward, reaching down with wild, desperate hands to snatch the crying infant from Elena’s arms.
