Chapter 9 - THE WEAKNESS OF POWER

By sunrise, the story of the Sterling estate incident had been effectively contained from the tabloids through a barrage of high-priced corporate non-disclosure agreements and non-committal police statements regarding an "internal family dispute."
Inside the estate's private study, Arthur sat behind his mahogany desk, surrounded by stacks of financial records and legal documents that Victoria had managed over the past three years following his wife's passing.
Sitting across from him was Julian, the family's chief legal counsel.
"The police forensic team accessed Victoria's private laptop under the search warrant issued this morning," Julian said, placing a thick black folder onto the desk. "It’s worse than we thought, Arthur."
Arthur rubbed his bloodshot eyes. "What did she do?"
"She wasn't just trying to eliminate Leo to gain control of the trust," Julian revealed, his voice dropping to a low whisper. "She has been systematically draining the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands for eighteen months. She lost over twelve million dollars in illegal foreign currency trades. If Leo had lived to his first birthday, an automatic independent audit of the trust would have been triggered by the court. She needed him gone before the audit."
Arthur felt a sickening coldness settle in his gut. "She was going to kill a baby to hide her financial theft."
"Yes," Julian confirmed flatly. "And there’s more. The autopsy reports from your wife's death two years ago... we've requested a formal review by the state coroner."
Arthur froze, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany desk so hard his knuckles turned white. "What are you saying, Julian?"
May you like
"Your wife died of a sudden cardiac event, Arthur," Julian reminded him gently. "Victoria was the one who prepared her evening tea that night. Given what we saw on that pool video... the prosecutor believes there is sufficient probable cause to suspect foul play in your wife's death as well."
The room seemed to spin. The walls of the luxurious mansion felt like they were collapsing inward, suffocating him with the weight of monstrous secrets hidden beneath layers of wealth and privilege.
