Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW OF THE ESTATE

The arrival of three city police cruisers twenty minutes later was a quiet affair, stripped of sirens to prevent media leaks that could crash the Sterling family's publicly traded logistics stocks.

Flanked by two uniformed officers, Victoria was led out through the main foyer of the villa. The cold steel handcuffs snapped shut over her wrists, binding her hands behind her gold satin dress, the cultured white pearl necklace hanging uselessly against her chest.

She didn't look at Arthur as she was escorted past him. She kept her head held high, a final, pathetic display of aristocratic pride, though her eyes were dead and hollow.

"Victoria Sterling," Officer Miller read from his tablet, "you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, child endangerment, and filing a false police report."

As the heavy oak front doors closed behind the police, taking Victoria away into the dark night, the massive villa fell into a deep, unsettling quiet.

Arthur stood in the center of the grand foyer, holding his son. The weight of what had almost happened slammed into his chest like a physical blow. If Elena hadn't been in the kitchen, if she hadn't jumped into that icy water without regard for her own life, his son would be dead—and he would have spent the rest of his life suspecting an innocent woman while living under the same roof as his son's killer.

He turned toward the living room, where Elena was still seated, looking small and fragile wrapped in the oversized wool blanket.

Arthur walked over, his heavy steps echoing on the marble floor. He stopped in front of her, his head bowed, his hands trembling as he held his sleeping child.

"Elena," Arthur said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I... I don't know how to ask for your forgiveness."

Elena looked up at the powerful man who, just thirty minutes ago, had shoved her to the ground in a blind rage. She saw the profound guilt in his eyes, the shatter of his reality, and the deep love he held for his child.

"You don't have to ask, Mr. Sterling," Elena said softly, her voice still raspy from the chlorine water she had swallowed. "You were protecting your son. Any father would have reacted the same way if he believed what she said."

"No," Arthur said firmly, sinking into the chair opposite her. "I hit you. I blamed you without checking the facts. I let my grief make me blind." He paused, looking down at infant Leo’s soft, sleeping face. "You saved his life, Elena. You risked yours to jump into ten feet of water in the middle of the night."
