Chapter 5 - THE BLIND BLOW

As Arthur ripped six-month-old Leo from Elena’s embrace, his grief and rage ignited into physical violence. Without giving the trembling young woman a fraction of a second to explain, he delivered a hard, open-handed shove directly against Elena’s shoulder.

The force of the blow, combined with the slick, wet marble floor beneath her, sent Elena crashing backward. She fell hard onto her side, her elbow slamming against the stone coping, a sharp spike of pain shooting up her arm. She lay on the wet marble, her beige uniform ruined, shivering uncontrollably as the cold night air bit into her skin.

"How could you?!" Arthur roared, cradling his crying, wet son against his black shirt, his body shaking with unbridled hostility. "We brought you into this house! We trusted you with my son!"

"Arthur, call the police!" Victoria commanded from behind him, her voice sharp, authoritative, and laced with absolute triumph. "Put her in prison where she belongs! She's a murderer!"

Elena pushed herself up onto her hands and knees, her chest heaving, tears of pain and indignation finally breaking past her resolve. She looked at Victoria, who stood beneath the warm light of the terrace, a subtle, cruel smirk fleetingly crossing her golden-sheathed features while Arthur was distracted with the baby.

Elena realized the depth of the trap. She was a young immigrant maid with no money, no social standing, and no voice that could stand against the ironclad word of Victoria Sterling. If the police arrived right now, she would be dragged away in handcuffs, accused of attempted murder, and locked in a cell for decades while the real monster remained in the mansion, free to try again.

Panic threatened to drown Elena, far more dangerous than the water in the pool. But as her eyes darted wildly around the manicured grounds, seeking a shred of hope, her gaze caught a faint, barely visible detail hidden amidst the lush greenery bordering the pool deck.

Deep within the dark, dense foliage of a manicured boxwood hedge, sitting less than ten feet from where Victoria had stood when she pushed the stroller, a small, white spherical object gleamed under the terrace light.

It was a high-definition, night-vision outdoor security camera—installed by the security firm just two days prior, its small, red status LED blinking softly in the dark.

A sharp, electric surge of clarity replaced the terror in Elena’s mind.

Still on her knees, wet, bleeding, and shivering, Elena straightened her spine. She raised a trembling, soaking-wet arm, her finger pointing directly through the darkness into the heart of the hedge, locking her eyes onto Arthur.

"No, sir!" Elena cried out, her voice ringing clear and loud across the quiet estate. "Check the camera! Look at the hedge! She's lying!"
