Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis was an suffocating masterpiece of crystal, velvet, and lies. Beneath the towering chandeliers that dripped with warm, honey-colored light, three hundred members of High Society stood sipping vintage champagne. The air was thick with the scent of white gardenias, expensive perfume, and latent malice.
At the center of the marble floor stood Julian Vance, looking every bit the ruthless tech mogul he was. Dressed in an immaculate black silk-lapel tuxedo, his jawline was carved from cold marble, his eyes dark and unreadable. Next to him stood Clara, his bride-to-be, encased in a sleeveless, custom-fit white lace wedding gown that clung to her like spiderweb.
Standing between them was seven-year-old Lily.
Lily wore a sleeveless blue tulle dress that fluffed out around her knees—a dress Julian had forced her into because it matched the color scheme of his carefully orchestrated public spectacle. Her long blonde hair fell in tangled strands over her shoulders, wet with hot tears that streamed endlessly down her porcelain skin.
"I don't want her to be my new mommy!" Lily’s voice pierced the refined murmur of the room, sharp, shrill, and entirely unscripted.
The ballroom fell into a dead, icy silence. The string quartet faded into a muted, discordant scratch.
Julian’s face didn't merely darken; it transformed. The polished, charismatic smile he had presented to the press all evening evaporated, revealing the terrifying, cold sociopath underneath. His hand shot down. His long, thick fingers clamped viciously around Lily’s fragile chin, tilting her small face upward until her feet almost left the marble floor.
"You will keep your mouth shut, Lily," Julian hissed under his breath, his knuckles turning white as he pinched her jaw.
"No!" Lily sobbed, her little chest heaving violently. "I don't want her! She's bad! I don't want her to be my new mommy!"
Julian didn't hesitate. Before the eyes of his investors, his political allies, and his bride, he drew back his right hand and struck his seven-year-old daughter across the face with a sickening, heavy slap.
SNAP.

The force of the blow turned Lily’s face sideways, sending a violent shockwave through her tiny frame. She stumbled backward onto the polished marble, her tiny fingers frantically clutching her left cheek. Within seconds, a deep, angry, red swelling bloomed across her pale skin.
Beside them, Clara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. Her eyes widened in genuine, raw horror as she backed away from Julian, her heavy lace gown rustling against the floor.
