Chapter 5 - The Shattered Mirage

The words hung in the air like a heavy, suffocating blanket.

Julian’s face drained of all color, going from a flush of anger to a sickly, stark white in a fraction of a second. His chest froze mid-breath. His eyes darted toward the back of the hall, a sudden, blinding panic breaking through his carefully constructed mask of control.

"Shut your mouth, James!" Julian screamed, abandoning all semblance of executive decorum. He lunged forward, reaching out to grab James by the throat. "Shut up!"

James didn't even flinch. He raised his left arm, blocking Julian’s strike with a swift, powerful forearm block, shoving his brother back three steps onto the marble floor.

"You told her she died in a car crash three years ago!" James yelled, his voice cutting through the hall. "You forged the medical records! You used your corporate lawyers to lock her away in a private facility in Zurich so you could seize her inheritance and her share of Vance Global!"

The guests gasped in unison. Clara took three steps backward, her white veil slipping from her hair as she stared at her fiancé as if he were a complete stranger—a monster draped in expensive Italian wool.

"That's a lie!" Julian shouted, his hands trembling as he reached into his jacket for his phone. "He's insane! Security, remove him! Remove him now!"

The security guards hesitated, looking at each other, paralyzed by the gravity of the accusation.

Lily stood frozen between the two men. Her small brain struggled to process the words echoing through the room. She looked from her uncle’s determined face to her father’s terrified expression.

"Mommy...?" Lily whispered, her voice tiny, fragile, and filled with a dangerous, heartbreaking hope. "Mommy is alive...?"

"Yes, baby," James said softly, taking her small, trembling hand into his own massive palm. "And she's here."
