Chapter 15 - The First Dawn

The morning sun rose over the horizon, casting brilliant beams of amber and rose gold light across the wide bedroom window of the quiet estate.
Evelyn had not slept. She had spent the entire night sitting in the soft armchair beside Lily’s bed, her eyes fixed on her daughter's face, ensuring that every breath the small girl took was real, that the nightmare had truly ended.
Lily stirred under the quilt. Her long eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her clear blue eyes.
The bright sunlight filled the room, illuminating the yellow walls, the stuffed animals, and her mother sitting right beside her, holding her hand.
Lily looked around the room, then looked up at Evelyn. The red swelling on her cheek had settled into a faint pink mark, no longer burning, no longer hot.
"Mommy?" Lily asked, her voice soft and sleepy.
"I'm right here, my sweet girl," Evelyn smiled, leaning over to kiss her forehead gently.
Lily reached up with her tiny hand, her small fingers touching Evelyn’s cheek, feeling the soft skin, verifying the warmth, making sure the illusion didn't shatter.
"Are we staying here?" Lily asked softly.
"Yes, baby," Evelyn said, wrapping her arms around her daughter and pulling her up into a warm hug as James stepped into the doorway carrying two cups of hot chocolate. "We are staying here forever. No more lies, no more dark rooms, and no more fear."

Lily looked past her mother's shoulder to Uncle James, who gave her a gentle, reassuring wink, then looked back into her mother's eyes.
For the first time in three years, the little girl in the blue dress let out a quiet, happy laugh—a sound that carried out through the open window into the warm, sunlit morning, where the sky was wide, clear, and completely free of shadows.
