Chapter 6 - The Opening of the Heavy Doors

At that exact second, the heavy, ten-foot mahogany double doors at the far end of the grand ballroom groaned on their brass hinges.
The security guards stationed at the entrance didn't even attempt to stop them. The doors swung inward, hitting the marble doorstops with a deep, echoing thud that reverberated through the length of the hall.
Backlit by the bright, white afternoon light streaming from the hotel lobby, a figure stood framed in the doorway.
She wore an elegant, cream-colored silk gown that draped softly around her slender frame. Her long blonde hair—the exact same shade and texture as Lily’s—fell over her shoulders in gentle waves. Her skin was pale, carrying the faint, fragile look of someone who had spent years isolated from the world, but her eyes were fixed, bright, and burning with an absolute, unstoppable motherly resolve.
It was Evelyn Vance.
The room collectively drew its breath. Men and women who had attended Evelyn’s quiet, closed-casket memorial service three years ago stared at her as if a ghost had walked out of the ether into the blinding gold light of the chandeliers.
Julian’s phone slipped from his numb fingers, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering its screen into a spiderweb of black glass.
"No..." Julian whispered, his lips moving without sound. "No... it's impossible..."
Clara turned toward the entrance, her hand pressed against her throat, completely immobilized by shock.

Lily turned her head slowly. Her small eyes widened, tracking the silhouette standing at the threshold of the grand hall. The tears on her cheeks froze as she looked at the face she had only seen in hidden, faded photographs under her bedsheets.
"Mommy?" Lily cried out, the word bursting from her chest in a mixture of disbelief and absolute, instinctual recognition.
