Chapter 2 - The Echo of the Fracture

Lily crouched on the cold floor, her small body shaking with uncontrollable convulsions. Her soft sob had morphed into a quiet, terrified hyperventilation. The bright lights of the chandelier above blurred into dizzying streaks of gold through her tear-filled eyes. The red welt on her cheek throbbed with a burning, white-hot heat that seemed to consume her entire mind.

Julian adjusted the cuffs of his tuxedo with cold, methodical precision, as if he had merely brushed a speck of lint off his sleeve. He looked down at his shivering daughter with utter disgust.

"Get her up," Julian commanded quietly, his dark eyes sweeping over the frozen crowd of guests. "Someone take her to the back room until the ceremony concludes."

The guests stood rooted to the floor. Among the high-society elite, cruelties were meant to be whispered behind heavy mahogany doors, buried beneath NDA agreements and Swiss bank accounts. They were not supposed to explode in the middle of a ten-million-dollar wedding reception.

Julian turned his gaze toward Clara. The bride was visibly shaking, her fingers digging into the delicate lace of her waistline.

"Julian..." Clara choked out, her voice barely audible over the faint hum of the air conditioning. "You... you hit her..."

"She needed discipline, Clara," Julian replied, his voice completely flat, devoid of a single drop of remorse. "She has been unmanageable for months. Do not make a scene in front of the press."

He stepped toward his bride, extending his arm as if nothing had occurred. But as he reached for her, a sudden, violent commotion erupted from the back of the grand ballroom.

Heavy marble pillars rattled as a man burst through the sea of blurred, tuxedo-clad guests, shoving security guards aside with brutal, unbridled force.
