Chapter 12 - The Healing Ground

Three months later.

Autumn had arrived in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The dense forests surrounding Site 7 were ablaze with brilliant shades of crimson, gold, and deep amber. The morning air was crisp, carrying the sweet scent of damp wood and falling leaves.

On the wide wooden porch of the main house, Clara sat wrapped in a soft cardigan. Her belly was noticeably rounded now, her pregnancy progressing healthily under the quiet, stress-free care of her medical team.

The red welts on her back had entirely faded, leaving behind only faint, pale shadows that were rapidly disappearing. More importantly, the hyper-vigilant terror that had gripped her for two years was finally beginning to melt away.

She watched as Arthur walked up the gravel driveway, carrying a box of fresh apples from a neighboring orchard.

"How are you feeling today?" Arthur asked, setting the box down on the porch table and pulling up a wooden chair beside her.

"I slept six hours straight last night," Clara said, a small, genuine smile gracing her lips. "No nightmares. No waking up at every sound."

"That's progress, sweetheart," Arthur smiled, reaching over to take her hand. "Real progress."

"I got a letter from the district attorney's office this morning," Clara said quietly, looking out over the golden valley. "Eleanor accepted a plea bargain. She agreed to testify against Julian's shell companies in exchange for a reduced sentence at a minimum-security facility."

"She chose survival over her son," Arthur noted flatly. "Typical for that family."

"And Julian?" Clara asked softly. It was the first time she had spoken his name in weeks.

"Julian’s legal team tried to file an insanity defense yesterday," Arthur said. "The court-appointed psychiatrist evaluated him for three hours and concluded he is completely sane, highly manipulative, and entirely fit to stand trial. His court date is set for November."

Clara took a deep breath, feeling the cool mountain air expand in her lungs. She placed her free hand on her rounded stomach, feeling a gentle, faint kick from within.

"He tried to make me feel small, Dad," she whispered. "He tried to make me believe that outside of his mansion, I didn't exist."

"He was wrong," Arthur said firmly. "You were the strongest person in that house, Clara. You fought your way out."
