Chapter 14 - The Final Verdict

In November, the federal trial of Julian Sterling came to its swift, definitive conclusion.

Because of the overwhelming digital evidence provided by Clara and Arthur's covert surveillance trap, Julian’s defense collapsed before the trial reached its second week. The prosecution presented forty-seven separate counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, illegal wiretapping, and aggravated domestic battery.

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

Julian was found guilty on all counts.

The judge, citing the systemic cruelty of his actions and his utter lack of remorse, sentenced Julian Sterling to thirty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of early release.

On the day of the sentencing, Clara did not attend the courtroom. She chose instead to stay at the mountain estate, sitting near the warm stone fireplace with her father and Evelyn, watching the snow fall gently outside the high arched windows.

Her phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was a text message from Agent Marcus Vance:

It's done. 35 years. He's being transferred to USP Florence this afternoon.

Clara picked up the phone, read the message once, and then slowly pressed the power button, letting the screen go black. She didn't feel a surge of vengeful triumph; she felt only a deep, profound sense of peace. The storm that had threatened to consume her life had finally passed, leaving behind a clear, open horizon.
