Chapter 8 - The Shadow Firm

The helicopter touched down on a private helipad hidden deep within a secluded fifty-acre estate in the Green Mountains. The property, known only as "Site 7" among Arthur’s inner circle, was a fully autonomous, fortified sanctuary equipped with independent satellite communications, medical facilities, and a dedicated security detail.

As the rotors spun down, three figures stepped out from the main residence to meet the aircraft.

Leading them was Dr. Evelyn Reed, a sharp-minded former intelligence analyst and trauma specialist who had worked alongside Arthur for over a decade. Beside her were two senior software engineers carrying encrypted laptops.

"Arthur," Evelyn said, stepping up to the cabin door as Arthur helped Clara down the stairs. "We just intercepted the local emergency dispatch logs from the Sterling district. The State Police responded to the mansion twenty minutes ago."

"And?" Arthur asked, leading Clara toward the warm light of the house.

Evelyn allowed herself a rare, subtle smile. "Julian Sterling was taken into custody on scene."

Clara stopped in her tracks, her breath hitching. "Already?"

"He panicked," Evelyn explained, pulling up a live audio transcript on her tablet. "When the police arrived, Julian was hysterical. He was screaming about tactical teams, stolen servers, and invisible helicopters. Given his visible facial injuries and his chaotic demeanor, the responding officers assumed he was undergoing a severe substance-induced psychotic episode. When he tried to shove one of the officers, they tased him and put him in restraints."

Arthur let out a short, quiet breath through his nose. "Poetic justice. His own arrogance made him sound like a madman."

"It gets better," Evelyn added as they entered the warm wood-paneled foyer of the sanctuary. "The FBI Financial Crimes Unit arrived at the precinct three hours ahead of schedule with a sealed federal indictment. They served the arrest warrant while he was still sitting in the holding cell wearing a hospital gown."
