Chapter 13 - Rebuilding

By winter, the first snowfall blanketed the Green Mountains in a silent, pristine layer of white powder.

The sanctuary had become a place of new beginnings. Clara spent her days painting in the sunlit studio on the second floor, reconnecting with an art form Julian had forbidden her from pursuing. Her paintings were no longer dark or constrained; they were expansive landscapes filled with light, motion, and freedom.

Arthur spent his mornings managing his private security firm's transition into a specialized non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of high-level domestic abuse—women who were trapped by wealthy, powerful men with resources that made conventional escape impossible.

"We have three new cases this week," Evelyn reported one morning during breakfast, sliding a dossier across the kitchen island to Arthur. "One in Chicago, two in Los Angeles. Both involving high-net-worth individuals using non-disclosure agreements and private surveillance to isolate their spouses."

Arthur opened the dossier, reading through the notes. "Mobilize Team Alpha. Use the same extraction protocol we used for Clara. Clean, silent, undeniable."

Clara walked into the kitchen, holding a cup of herbal tea. She looked at the dossiers on the counter and then at her father.

"Let me help with the strategic planning," Clara said calmly.

Arthur looked up, surprised. "Clara, you don't need to involve yourself in this—"

"I want to, Dad," Clara interrupted gently, her voice ringing with an iron confidence that had been absent for years. "I know how these men think. I know how they use their wealth to create psychological prisons. I know where they hide their cameras, how they manipulate legal staff, and how they weaponize isolation. I can help these women get their lives back."

Arthur looked at his daughter for a long moment, seeing not the traumatized victim he had rescued from the marble floor six months ago, but a fierce, empowered woman standing fully in her own authority.

A slow, proud smile spread across his face. "Alright, strategic advisor Vance. Take a seat."
