Chapter 4 - The Vanguard

The heavy doors of the black SUVs slammed open in near-simultaneous unison. Eight men in unmarked tactical gear, carrying high-end breach equipment and non-lethal sidearms, poured out onto the manicured lawn. They moved with the terrifying, rhythmic efficiency of former special operations operators, securing the perimeter within seconds.
Inside the foyer, two tactical operators crossed the shattered doorway, their boots stepping over the splintered wood.
"Sir! Perimeter secured," the lead operator reported, his voice muffled behind a black ballistic mask. "Local law enforcement frequency has been jammed within a two-mile radius. No outgoing signals."
Julian’s eyes bulged. "Jammed? You can't jam cell towers! That’s a federal crime!"
"Shut up, Julian," Arthur said without looking at him. He slid his handgun back into its shoulder holster beneath his green jacket, then reached down to gently lift Clara into his arms. Clara groaned softly as the movement stretched the bruised skin on her back, but she wrapped her arms tightly around her father's neck, hiding her face against his shoulder.
"Get her to the primary vehicle. Have the medic check those welts," Arthur ordered the lead operator. "I want a full photographic record of every mark on her body before we dress the wounds. Legal chain of custody."
"Copy that, Commander." The operator stepped forward, assisting Arthur as they shielded Clara from the sight of the Sterling family.
Eleanor stood frozen against the wall, her hands trembling as she watched her daughter-in-law being carried away. "You won't get away with this, Arthur Vance. The Sterling name—"
"The Sterling name is about to become a footnote in a federal indictment, Eleanor," Arthur interrupted, turning his gaze toward the older woman. His eyes were cold, devoid of any warmth. "I spent the last six months letting you think my daughter was isolated. I let Julian think he had successfully cut her off from my influence. Do you know why?"
Eleanor swallowed hard, unable to answer.

"Because I needed Julian to feel completely, utterly secure," Arthur continued softly, taking a step toward her. "A secure predator gets sloppy. He leaves his encryption keys in his home office. He uses the same server for his domestic wiretaps that he uses for his offshore laundering. Every camera Julian installed in this house to spy on my daughter has been streaming directly to a secure server in my office for ninety days."
Julian’s face went entirely white, all the anger instantly draining from his eyes. "What?"
