Chapter 2 - The Breach

The heavy mahogany double doors at the front entrance did not merely open; they shattered inward with the force of a battering ram.

The sudden explosion of splintering wood and clattering brass latches boomed through the high-ceilinged mansion like a cannon shot. Eleanor dropped her crystal glass; it shattered on the marble floor, sparkling water cascading across the stone. Julian froze mid-swing, the black leather belt suspended in the air above his shoulder.

Through the dust and sunlight framing the doorway stood Arthur Vance.

At sixty-four, Arthur was a man forged in a vastly different world than the pampered halls of the Sterling family. He wore a heavy, dark green tactical utility jacket over a dark collar shirt, his silver hair cropped short, his broad shoulders squared. His face was a map of weathered fury, his deep-set eyes locked directly onto Julian.

"Stop it! Drop it!" Arthur shouted. His voice was not merely loud; it carried the terrifying, resonant weight of a man who had commanded men in war zones long before he built his private security empire.

Julian snapped his head toward the door, his shock turning almost instantly into arrogant indignation. "What the hell is this? Who let you in here—"

Arthur moved with an explosive, terrifying speed that defied his age. Crossing the grand foyer in three long, lunging strides, he bypassed the shattered doors and ignored Eleanor entirely. As Julian attempted to adjust his posture and lower the belt toward the intruder, Arthur reached out with a thick, calloused left hand and grabbed Julian’s right wrist in a steel vise grip.

Julian gasped as the bone in his wrist compressed. The black leather belt slipped from his fingers, hitting the marble floor with a soft thud.

"You hit my daughter?" Arthur demanded. His voice was terrifyingly low now, trembling with a dark, dangerous vibration.

"Get your filthy hands off me, old man!" Julian snarled, trying to pull his arm back. "Do you have any idea who I am? Stay out of this!"

Arthur didn't waste another word. With his right hand, he drew back his fist and drove a short, brutal cross straight into the center of Julian’s face.

The impact sounded like a wet leather sack hitting concrete. Julian’s head snapped back violently. A spray of sweat and saliva caught the sunlight as Julian’s knees buckled. His polished dress shoes lost all traction on the marble floor, and he crashed heavily onto his side right beside the edge of the charcoal-grey velvet sofa, groaning in agony as his hand flew to his shattered nose.

"You're done," Arthur said coldly, looking down at the young heir with absolute, unadulterated contempt.
