Chapter 11 - The Poolside Footage

The most harrowing moment of the trial came on the second week, when the prosecution presented the 4K security camera footage from the poolside incident.

The gallery was dead silent as the high-definition video appeared on the screen. The night vision was razor-sharp, rendering every detail in stark clarity.

The jury watched as Clara yanked the locket from Sophy’s neck. They saw her toss the silver medallion into the deep end. They watched Sophy reach out, lose her footing, and plunge into the dark water.

And then, the courtroom watched in horror as the video played through forty-five full seconds of Sophy thrashing, screaming for help, while Clara stood completely motionless on the edge of the pool, her arms crossed over her navy dress.

The audio recording echoed through the courtroom speakers: 'You fell because you were playing.'

A woman in the gallery burst into tears. One of the male jurors slammed his hand down on the armrest of his chair, glaring at Clara with undisguised disgust.

Clara’s defense attorney, Richard Hayes, slumped in his chair, realizing that any attempt to cross-examine the footage would only alienate the jury further.

Adams stood up and faced the jury box. "That video shows you the true heart of Clara Sterling. Not a victim of circumstance. A cold, unfeeling predator who watched a child drown without lifting a single finger."
