Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Elena

The flashing red and blue lights of the police vehicles swept across the towering glass walls of the Vance estate, slicing through the darkness of the patio. Clara offered no physical resistance as the officers placed her in iron cuffs, but her eyes burned with a silent, venomous fury as she was escorted down the limestone driveway into the waiting patrol car.
Inside the villa, the silence returned, thick and suffocating.
Julian sat on the edge of the leather sofa beside Sophy, who had finally drifted into an exhausted, trauma-induced sleep under the heavy blanket. The gas fireplace crackled quietly in the wall, throwing flickering shadows across the modern artwork, but the room felt completely devoid of heat.
Julian stared down at his phone. His fingers hovered over the video file stored on the micro SD card. He took a slow breath, braced himself, and pressed play.
The small screen filled with the image of Elena sitting inside her parked car on the evening of her death. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with fear, and her hands trembled as she held the very silver locket Sophy had been wearing.
"Julian... I don't have much time," Elena’s recorded voice whispered, the audio crisp and clear despite the quiet background hum of the engine. "Clara knows I discovered the embezzled funds. I tried to confront her, but she threatened to hurt Sophy if I went to the police. I noticed the warning light on my dashboard two minutes ago... the brakes aren't responding properly. I'm writing this from the side of the road before I try to downshift and get down the mountain. If I don't make it... please know I loved you both. Don't let her take Sophy."
The video cut to black.
Julian closed his eyes, a single hot tear cutting through the dried chlorine on his cheek. He pressed his forehead against his clenched fist, his knuckles turning stark white. For six months, he had blamed himself for letting Elena drive alone that night. He had allowed her killer into his home, into his life, and near his daughter.
"Daddy?" a small, delicate voice called out.
Julian wiped his face quickly and turned. Sophy was sitting up, her small hands clutching the wool blanket around her chest.
"I'm right here, sweetheart," Julian said softly, pulling her close into his arms.

"Is the dark lady coming back?" Sophy asked, resting her cheek against his shoulder.
"No, Sophy," Julian whispered, kissing her forehead. "She's gone. She's never coming back."
