Chapter 13 - Rebuilding the Broken House

In the months following the trial, Julian focused entirely on creating a safe, loving environment for Sophy.

They left the Vance estate behind, selling the property to a charitable organization that transformed the house into an educational center for underprivileged children. Julian purchased a cozy, two-story wooden home situated on a quiet coastal bluff overlooking the ocean, far away from the polished limestone and cold glass of the past.

Sophy spent her days running through the high grass, playing with a golden retriever puppy Julian had adopted for her, her laughter filling the warm coastal air.

"Look, Daddy!" Sophy shouted one afternoon, pointing at a sailboat gliding across the blue horizon. "It's going so fast!"

Julian sat on the porch bench, a sketchbook resting in his lap. He was drawing a portrait of Sophy—and around her neck, drawn with fine detail, was the silver medallion.

"It's a beautiful boat, Sophy," Julian said, setting his pencil down as she ran up the porch steps to sit beside him.

Sophy reached into her dress and pulled out the locket, opening the silver casing to reveal the small picture of her mother inside. "Mommy would like this house," she said softly.

"She would love it, Sophy," Julian agreed, wrapping his arm around her. "She would love watching you grow up here."
