Chapter 2 - The Rescue and the Lie

The frantic, unnatural splashing outside breached the heavy soundproof glass doors of the primary suite.
Julian Vance bolted out onto the patio. A man of thirty-eight with sharp, hardened features, dark hair, and an athletic frame now rigid with instinctual terror, he wore an unbuttoned navy shirt. His eyes took in the scene in a fraction of a second: his daughter drowning in the indigo water, and Clara standing like a statue on the edge.
"Sophy!" Julian’s roar tore through the quiet estate.
He sprinted across the slippery limestone, his footfalls sounding like thunder. He didn't waste a second confronting Clara; as he reached the pool, his shoulder collided violently with her arm, shoving her backward against a row of rattan lounge chairs. Julian dropped to his knees at the water's edge, diving half his upper body directly into the freezing pool.
"Hold on! I've got you!" he shouted.
His hands plunged into the dark water, locking onto the sodden collar of Sophy’s cream dress. Straining his muscles, Julian hoisted his daughter out of the pool and pulled her onto the dry stone deck. Sophy convulsed violently, spewing chlorinated water from her mouth and nose, her skin pale and icy to the touch. Julian tore off his dark shirt, grabbed a thick white towel from a nearby chair, and wrapped her tightly, pressing her small, shivering chest against his own heart.
"I've got you, baby. Daddy's got you. Breathe, Sophy, breathe," Julian gasped, his hands trembling as he smoothed her dripping hair away from her face.
Behind him, Clara scrambled to her feet. The cold, calculating facade vanished instantly, replaced by a masterclass of manicured hysteria. She clasped her hands over her mouth, her dark eyes wide and flooding with fake tears as she stumbled toward Julian.
"Oh my god! Julian! She slipped!" Clara wailed, her voice high and trembling with manufactured horror. "I tried to reach for her! I couldn't grab her in time! I told her not to run near the water!"
Sophy clung to Julian's neck, her tiny fingers digging into his back. She buried her wet face in his shoulder, her voice a raspy, waterlogged whimper. "She threw mommy's medal! She dropped it in the water!"
Julian froze. He turned his head slowly. The overwhelming terror in his chest transformed into a cold, lethal rage as his bloodshot eyes locked onto Clara.
"You stood there and watched!" Julian spat out, his voice dropping into a register that made the air feel heavier.

"She's confused, Julian! She's hysterical!" Clara gasped, taking a step back as she saw the raw menace in his expression. "She fell! Why would I throw her mother's necklace? I love this child!"
"Shut up, Clara," Julian growled, rising slowly to his feet while holding Sophy firmly in his arms. "Just shut your mouth."
