Chapter 6 - The Depths of the Pool

Morning broke over the Vance estate in a brilliant burst of golden sunlight, burning away the indigo shadows that had shrouded the patio the night before.
Julian stood at the edge of the pool wearing a black wetsuit. The water was crystalline under the morning sky, casting shimmering network patterns of light across the limestone deck. On a dry bench a few yards away sat Sophy, wrapped in a plush pink robe, holding a mug of warm chocolate provided by the estate’s trusted long-time housekeeper, Mrs. Gable.
"Can you see it, Daddy?" Sophy asked, her voice light but hesitant.
Julian looked down through the clear water toward the deep end. Sitting near the stainless-steel drain cover, six feet beneath the surface, the silver medallion reflected the morning sun like a beacon.
"I see it, baby," Julian said, offering her a warm, reassuring smile. "I'm going to get it now."
Julian adjusted his diving mask and slid into the water. The cold shock of the pool cleared his mind completely. He kicked off the wall, diving straight down into the blue depths, his strokes long and deliberate.
He reached the bottom and extended his right hand. His fingers closed around the cool, heavy metal of the silver medallion. As he gripped the pendant, a profound sense of closure washed over him—a silent, sacred promise honored between him and the woman he had lost.
Julian kicked off the floor of the pool, breaking the surface with a spray of water, drawing a deep breath as he held the silver medallion high above his head.
Sophy stood up on the bench, clapping her small hands together, a bright, beautiful smile lighting up her face. "You got it! You got mommy's medal!"
Julian climbed up the pool steps and walked over to his daughter. He dried his hands thoroughly on a towel before sitting beside her. Using a small tool provided by the police forensics team—who had returned the original locket after extracting the digital evidence—Julian carefully re-secured the silver backplate, locking the locket back together with a clean, metallic click.
He placed the silver chain gently around Sophy’s neck, letting the heavy pendant rest against her chest.
"There," Julian whispered, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "It's right where it belongs."

Sophy held the medallion in her small hand, her fingers tracing the carved filigree. "Mommy is keeping us safe, right?"
"Always, Sophy," Julian said, pulling her close. "Always."
