THE GLASS CRADLE OF LIES / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Chandelier's Shadow

The dark blue velvet curtains hung like heavy funeral shrouds against the gold-trimmed wall panels of the Vance estate's private dining hall. Above, the multi-tiered crystal chandelier cast a high-contrast glow across the polished marble floor, bathing the room in an uneasy fusion of warm amber light and cold blue ambient shadows. The air inside the room was suffocatingly thick, rich with the scents of aged mahogany, expensive perfume, and an underlying metallic tang of impending tragedy. Standing near the center of the grand chamber was Eleanor, her long brown hair cascading down the shoulders of her light pink silk robe. Beneath the soft, shimmering fabric, the curve of her eight-month pregnant stomach was prominently visible—a bump that carried not just the promise of new life, but the sole heir to the vast Vance pharmaceutical empire.

Opposite Eleanor stood Julianna, her step-sister, dressed in a jaw-dropping strapless dark blue velvet evening gown that mirrored the oppressive curtains behind her. Julianna’s fiery red hair was pulled back into a tight, slick high ponytail, accentuating the sharp, predator-like contours of her cheekbones and her dark green eyes, which currently burned with an unbridled, desperate fury. For months, Julianna had watched Eleanor inherit everything: the family fortune, the public adoration, and above all, Marcus—the scion of the Vance dynasty. Now, with the unborn child merely weeks away from entering the world, Julianna felt the last threads of her control snapping into dust.

"You think you’ve won, don’t you?" Julianna whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and sorrow. She stepped closer to Eleanor, her velvet gown rustling softly against the marble tiles. "You come into this house, wearing that pathetic silk, pretending to be an innocent angel while you bleed my father's legacy dry. You took Marcus. You took my place. And now you’re going to give him the heir he always wanted."

Eleanor pressed her right hand firmly against her abdomen, feeling the gentle, reassuring kick of her unborn baby beneath the silk robe. She took a slow step backward until her spine brushed against the edge of the massive, modern glass dining table resting on its geometric chrome base. The glass top was three inches thick, custom-crafted, and reflected the glittering lights of the chandelier like an icy mirror.

"Julianna, please calm down," Eleanor said, her voice soft but trembling with genuine fear. She knew how unstable her step-sister had become since the reading of their father’s secret codicil, but she had never seen Julianna look so utterly consumed by madness. "This isn't about the money or the estate. Marcus loves me. We are a family now. You need help, Julianna. We can get you help, but you have to stop this."

"Help?!" Julianna shrieked, her hands clenching into tight fists at her sides. Her manicured nails dug so hard into her palms that she drew blood. "I don't need help, Eleanor! I need you erased! I need this bastard child gone!"

Before Eleanor could scream for the house guards, Julianna lunged forward. Her movements were unnaturally fast, fueled by months of accumulated hatred and toxic envy. She slammed both of her hands violently against Eleanor's upper torso, driving her full weight forward with cold, deliberate force. Eleanor’s breath exploded from her lungs in a sharp gasp as her balance failed completely. She was hurled backward onto the modern glass dining table.

The structural integrity of the heavy glass gave way under the violent impact. A sound like a gunshot shattered the stillness of the estate as the thick glass table fractured, exploding into thousands of jagged, sharp crystalline shards.

Eleanor crashed onto the hard marble floor amid the shower of sharp glass fragments. A violent, agonizing pain shot through her lower abdomen, causing her body to curl involuntarily into a defensive fetal position. Shards of glass sliced through the thin pink silk of her robe, scoring her skin, but her hands remained frantically clamped over her womb, trying to shield her child from the devastating trauma. She let out a guttural, breathy scream of pure agony, her eyes wide with terror as she felt a terrifying sensation of warmth spreading beneath her lower back.

Julianna stood splay-footed above the destruction, her breathing heavy and ragged. For a fraction of a second, as she stared at the sprawling pool of broken glass and Eleanor’s twisting, blood-stained form, a flash of genuine horror crossed her face. The reality of what she had done threatened to crush her chest. But then, the sound of heavy, frantic footsteps echoing down the grand hallway outside the double doors snapped her back to reality. Survival instinct, twisted by malice, instantly reclaimed her mind.

The heavy mahogany double doors burst open with a resounding thud.

Into the room rushed Marcus. He was impeccably dressed in a dark blue velvet tuxedo with a black silk bow tie, his silver-grey hair neatly swept back, looking every bit the ruthless corporate magnate he was raised to be. But the moment his eyes registered the room, his regal demeanor completely collapsed into sheer, unadulterated shock.

The camera swung down to an extreme low-angle, capturing Marcus’s reflection in a large, razor-sharp fragment of glass lying near Eleanor’s head. His reflection wobbled and distorted in the pool of blood beginning to seep across the floor.

Julianna didn't hesitate. Before Marcus could even process the horror before him, she collapsed onto her knees beside the broken chrome base of the table. She clutched her own chest with hands that shook uncontrollably, squeezing her eyes shut as fat, convincing tears spilled down her pale cheeks. She gasped for air, her voice breaking into a masterclass of manipulative performative hysteria.

"Marcus...!" Julianna cried out, her voice echoing mournfully off the high velvet-draped walls. "Oh God, Marcus... She attacked me! Eleanor lost her mind... she pushed me, and when I tried to stop her, she jumped onto the table! Please, Marcus, you have to believe me! She tried to kill me!"

Marcus stood completely frozen in the doorway. His sharp grey eyes darted from Julianna’s trembling, tear-streaked face down to Eleanor, who was squirming in silent, agonizing pain on the glass-littered floor, unable to speak as shock locked her throat. Marcus’s face tightened with a complex mixture of suspicion, confusion, and deep-seated paranoia.

Above them all, mounted silently in the dark corner of the gold-trimmed ceiling, a small black dome security camera clicked faintly. Its tiny red LED light blinked steadily in the dim shadows—a silent, unblinking eye that had recorded every single micro-second of the bloody betrayal.
