Chapter 13 - The Matriarch's Gambit

The grand drawing room of the Villa was bathed in the amber light of the setting sun. The dark blue velvet drapes had been drawn back, allowing the fading daylight to illuminate the high-ceilinged room.
Helena Vance sat in the central wingback chair, sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup as if she had never left the Vance estate. Opposite her sat Eleanor and Marcus, flanked by Commander Vance—Marcus's head of private security—who stood near the door with his hand resting near his concealed sidearm.
"You died twenty years ago," Marcus said, his voice flat, demanding an explanation. "The Monaco plane crash."
"A necessary fiction, Marcus," Helena replied smoothly, setting her cup down on the saucer with a quiet click. "Arthur was becoming unmanageable. He believed healthcare was a moral right—a childish notion that threatened the long-term solvency of our international holdings. I faked my death to build the infrastructure necessary to protect our true assets from his idealistic incompetence."
Eleanor leaned forward, her hands tightly clasped in her lap. "You built the Swiss Syndicate. You paid Julianna. You authorized the attack on my baby!"
Helena’s green eyes turned to Eleanor, expressing a cold, detached pity. "Julianna was an unstable asset, my dear. A tragic mistake of Arthur's second marriage. She was greedy, sloppy, and emotional. I gave her enough rope to hang herself, and she did so magnificently. As for the attack on your baby... I never ordered Victoria's death. I ordered her retrieval."
Marcus’s hand tightened into a fist against his knee. "Why? She was a newborn!"
"Because Victoria is not simply Arthur's biological descendant," Helena said, her tone dropping into a matter-of-fact revelation. "Arthur's final project—the Genesis Protocol—was not just a cellular repair matrix. It was a targeted genetic sequence designed to unlock the dormant neural pathways of human memory and cognition. He integrated the final master key into Victoria's synthetic DNA before her birth."
The room fell into a stunned, terrifying silence. Eleanor felt a cold sweat break out along her spine.
"Victoria... isn't just healed," Eleanor whispered, her mind racing back to the moment the newborn baby had snapped her infant hands around the mercenary's wrist in the nursery. "She’s..."
"She is the living archive of Arthur's entire life's work," Helena completed the sentence, standing up gracefully with the help of her silver-topped cane. "Every formula, every patent, every black-budget bio-tech development Arthur created over forty years is encoded within her cellular structure. And as her grandmother, I hold the legal guardianship papers issued by the High Court of Liechtenstein twenty-four hours ago."
Helena reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a thick document stamped with official red wax seals, laying it gently on the coffee table between them.
"You have twenty-four hours to hand Victoria over to my care," Helena said, looking at Eleanor with absolute confidence. "If you refuse, I will release the complete financial archives detailing Marcus's early involvement with our offshore entities. You will both be arrested for international fraud, and Victoria will become a ward of the Liechtenstein court anyway."

Marcus stood up, his posture rigid, his eyes burning with lethal intent. "You will never touch my daughter."
Helena smiled—a cold, beautiful, terrifying smile. "We shall see, Marcus. We shall see."
