Chapter 3 - The Surgical Sanctuary

The private medical wing of the Vance estate was situated in the subterranean level of the West Wing—a state-of-the-art facility designed to handle high-profile medical emergencies away from the prying eyes of the press. The white LED lights overhead flickered to life as Marcus carried Eleanor through the double steel doors, setting her carefully onto the stainless steel operating table.

Dr. Harrison, a veteran surgeon with silver hair and a hardened face, was already scrubbing in along with two private nurses. The air was sterile, cold, and smelled strongly of iodine and rubbing alcohol.

"Get her robe off!" Dr. Harrison ordered, sliding his gloved hands over Eleanor’s swollen abdomen. "Fetal heart rate is dropping rapidly! We have acute placental abruption caused by blunt force trauma! If we don't perform an emergency C-section right now, we will lose both the mother and the child!"

Eleanor was slipping in and out of consciousness. The bright surgical lights blinded her, casting surreal halos around the faces of the medical team. She could feel the cold metal of the table against her bare skin as the nurses cut away the ruined pink silk robe.

"Marcus..." Eleanor groaned, her hand reaching out blindly into the air. "Don't let... don't let Julianna near the baby..."

Marcus stood near the door, his hands clasped behind his back, his dark blue tuxedo stained with his wife's blood. He watched the monitor beside the bed, where the baby's heartbeat hummed in a frantic, irregular rhythm: beep... beep... beep-beep... beep...

"Is the child viable?" Marcus asked, his voice entirely devoid of panic, operating purely on cold calculation.

"She’s at thirty-four weeks, Marcus!" Dr. Harrison yelled, preparing the scalpel. "She's viable, but her oxygen supply is severely compromised! Step out of the room now! We need absolute isolation!"

Marcus stepped back into the observation hallway as the automated glass doors slid shut, sealing the surgical room. Through the glass, he watched the medical team work with frantic, blood-soaked efficiency. But Marcus was not thinking solely of his child's survival. He was running through the financial implications of the night's events.

Under the terms of the Vance-Sterling merger, if Eleanor bore a living heir, eighty percent of the voting shares in Vance Pharmaceutical would automatically vest into a private trust controlled exclusively by Eleanor until the child reached adulthood. However, if Eleanor was proven to be mentally unfit—or if she was convicted of a violent felony—control of the trust would default to the secondary beneficiary named in the estate charter: Julianna.

A quiet step echoed in the hallway behind Marcus. He turned his head slightly to see Julianna approaching. She had changed out of her blood-spotted velvet evening gown into a simple, elegant dark cashmere sweater and tailored trousers. She carried a silver tray with two crystal glasses of scotch.

"You look like you need this," Julianna said softly, standing beside him and offering a glass.

Marcus didn't take the glass. He kept his eyes fixed on the surgical room behind the glass window. "You changed fast."

"The dress was ruined," Julianna said smoothly, taking a small sip of her own drink. "Marcus... I know this is horrific for you. You loved her. Or at least, you thought she was the woman she claimed to be. But Eleanor has been unravelling for weeks. Her father's death destroyed her mind. She couldn't handle the pressure of the pregnancy."

"She didn't seem unravelling to me this morning," Marcus noted, his voice flat.

"She hid it from you because she wanted the money!" Julianna insisted, leaning closer to him, her tone dropping to an intimate, persuasive whisper. "She knew that if she delivered the baby, she would control Vance Pharma. When I confronted her about the financial irregularities in her father's estate tonight, she lost control. She attacked me, Marcus. The glass broke because I defended myself."

Marcus slowly turned his head to look at Julianna. He reached out, his thumb gently catching a stray lock of her red hair and tucking it behind her ear. Julianna’s breath hitched, a look of triumph gleaming deep within her green eyes.

"If the baby dies tonight, Julianna," Marcus murmured, his face inches from hers, "what happens to the trust?"

"It comes to me," Julianna whispered back, her lips curling into a subtle, dangerous smile. "And as we always planned... it comes to us."

Inside the surgical suite, a sudden, piercing flatline alarm shattered the rhythm of the monitors. BEEEEEEP.

Dr. Harrison’s head snapped toward the window, his eyes wide with panic as he reached for the defibrillator paddles. Through the glass, Marcus and Julianna watched the chaotic scene unfold. Julianna let out a quiet, trembling sigh of relief, while Marcus’s hand tightened into a hard fist against his side.
