Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Ledger

The master study of the Vance estate was a sanctuary of dark oak, leather-bound books, and bulletproof floor-to-ceiling glass windows that looked out over the foggy, pine-covered cliffs of the estate's coastal property. A log fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace, casting long, dancing orange shadows across the room.
Julianna sat behind the antique mahogany desk—the very desk that had belonged to Eleanor's late father, Arthur Vance. She had a glass of scotch in one hand and a gold fountain pen in the other, reviewing the board documents that would transfer voting power to her at sunrise.
"A tragic accident," she murmured to herself, writing the words neatly into the draft press release. "Brave step-sister steps in to preserve corporate stability..."
A subtle sound interrupted her thoughts—the soft, mechanical click of a safe opening.
Julianna turned her head sharply toward the far wall of the study. Tucked behind a large oil painting of the Vance family lineage was the concealed wall safe. Standing in front of it was Marcus. He had opened the steel door and was pulling out a thick, leather-bound ledger tied with a faded ribbon.
Julianna set her glass down, her eyes widening with immediate greed. "Marcus... is that Arthur's personal ledger? The real financial records?"
Marcus walked over to the desk, setting the heavy ledger down between them. The paper was old, smelling of dust and dried ink. He flipped it open to a section marked with red index tabs.
"Before Arthur died of his 'sudden heart attack' six months ago," Marcus said, his voice calm and measured, "he suspected someone was systematically draining the company’s R&D accounts. He kept this hand-written ledger as a duplicate trace."
Julianna’s hands twitched slightly. She reached out to touch the paper, but Marcus placed his hand flat over the page, blocking her view.
"Arthur discovered that forty million dollars had been diverted to an offshore entity called Nox Holdings," Marcus continued, looking directly into Julianna’s eyes. "Nox Holdings is registered in Panama. The sole beneficial owner of Nox Holdings is listed under a maiden name: Julianna Sterling."
Julianna’s breath caught in her throat. The warm glow of the fireplace suddenly felt scorchingly hot against her skin. She forced a hollow, nervous laugh, trying to brush it off.
"Marcus... that’s ridiculous. Arthur was senile at the end! He was paranoid, accusing everyone—"
"Arthur wasn't senile," Marcus interrupted coldly. "He was being poisoned. Small, daily doses of thallium sulfate mixed into his evening tea. Thallium is tasteless, odorless, and mimics the symptoms of progressive heart failure."
Julianna stood up slowly from behind the desk, her chair scraping loudly against the wooden floorboards. The friendly, intimate demeanor she had maintained all night dissolved, replaced by a dark, defensive stillness.
"What are you doing, Marcus?" she asked, her voice dropping an octave into a dangerous murmur. "Are you trying to blackmail me? After everything we've built together?"
"I’m trying to understand," Marcus said smoothly, leaning back against the edge of the desk. "Did you push Eleanor tonight because she discovered the ledger? Or did you push her because you realized her baby’s DNA would be tested upon birth—revealing the genetic markers of Arthur's line?"
Julianna froze. The silence in the study became deafening, broken only by the snapping of logs in the fireplace.
"What did you just say?" Julianna whispered, her face draining of all color.
Marcus leaned forward, his silver-grey hair catching the light of the fire. "Eleanor’s baby isn't mine, Julianna. And it certainly isn't a random child’s. Before Arthur died, Eleanor underwent a private, in-vitro procedure using Arthur’s preserved genetic material to ensure the Vance bloodline remained entirely pure and untouchable by outside heirs like you."
Julianna’s jaw dropped. The terrifying scope of the trap surrounding her began to dawn on her mind. The baby sleeping downstairs in the incubator wasn't just Marcus's child; it was the ultimate legal instrument created by Arthur Vance before his death to completely disinherit Julianna forever.

"You knew..." Julianna gasped, her eyes wide with terror. "You knew all along!"
"I knew," Marcus agreed quietly. "Which brings us to the most important question of the night, Julianna: What do you think is on the security footage ceiling camera in the dining room?"
